After two years in that role, he came to the University of Virginia and taught as assistant professor, associate professor and professor of law. Over the years, he has gained valuable expertise with the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot as an editor, the U.S. Department of Justice as a deputy assistant attorney general of the civil rights division, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, where he works as a judge. President Ronald Reagan appointed him to the role in the mid-1980s.
An expert in his field, Mr. Wilkinson holds a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University, a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Virginia, two honorary Doctor of Jurisprudences from the University of South Carolina and the University of Richmond, and an honorary Doctor of Letters from Christopher Newport University. With decades of knowledge at his disposal, he has authored a number of books, including "Harry Byrd and the Changing Face of Virginia Politics," "Serving Justice: A Supreme Court Clerk's View," "From Brown to Bakke: The Supreme Court and School Integration" and "One Nation Indivisible: How Ethnic Separatism Threatens America," among others.
In his spare time, Mr. Wilkinson makes it a point to give back to his community through his role on the board of trustees at the Virginia Historical Society. Previously, he held similar positions with the University of Virginia, the Federal Judicial Center, the James Madison Memorial Foundation and the Tuesday Evening Concert Series. For his professional accomplishments, he has earned many awards such as the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal of Law from the University of Virginia and the Rule of Law Award from the Virginia Holocaust Museum and Virginia Law Foundation. Additionally, he has had the honor of inclusion into numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in American Politics and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. In the coming years, Mr. Wilkinson intends to experience the continued success of his role in the Fourth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals.
