A celebrated educator with more than five decades of professional experience, Dr. Stabile has been serving as a Professor of the College at St. Mary's College since 2005, having previously been a full professor of economics from 1989 to 2005, associate professor of economics from 1985 to 1989, and assistant professor of economics from 1980 to 1985. While pursuing his role as an educator, he also held several other roles with the college, including as an associate dean, chair of liberal arts, summer seminar leader with the National Endowment of the Humanities, co-chair of the middle states reaccreditation review, associate provost, and chair of the economics department. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Stabile served Drury University as an assistant professor of economics, the National Society of Accountants as an associate editor, Standard & Poors Corporation as a statistician, and Dixie Music Company as vice president.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Stabile contributed to many organizations and facilities, including as the former director of the St. Mary's Center for Economic Education, columnist for the Enterprise Newspaper, principal researcher at CH Associates Inc., book reviewer at the Business Library Review, and faculty member of the Students in Free Enterprise. He was also recognized as a Fellow of the Students in Free Enterprise. Likewise, Dr. Stabile was a managing director of Bayesian Edge Technology & Solutions Inc. and secretary and board member of the Cremona Foundation, where he has remained since 2012.
Passionate about his community, Dr. Stabile has lent his time and expertise to numerous foundations and committees. A volunteer of the Arc of the United States and as a technical service organizer for the Internal Revenue Service, he was an essay judge for the Hugh O'Brien Foundation and an advisor of the St. Mary's College Student Investment Group. In addition, Dr. Stabile served as a member and chair of the Maryland Textbook Affordability Subcommittee, a volunteer at the Make a Wish Foundation, and a project reviewer for the National Endowment for the Humanities.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Stabile pursued a formal education at the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1966. He subsequently attended the University of Massachusetts, receiving a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1972 and 1979, respectively. A prolific author, he has also contributed several articles to professional journals and chapters to books, having formerly acted as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Economic Issues and an associate editor of Essays in Economic and Business History. Notably, Dr. Stabile is the author of eight books, including "Prophets of Order" in 1984, "Activist Unionism" in 1993, "The Origins of American Public Finance" in 1998, and "The Living Wage" in 2008.
In an effort to remain aware of recent developments within the industry, Dr. Stabile maintains affiliation with several organizations. A Fellow of Lambda Alpha International at St. Mary's College, where he was the Yeager Endowed Chair from 2000 to 2003 and Honorary Alumnus in 2004, he remains a member of the American Economic Association and The History of Economics Society. Previously, Dr. Stabile was a member of the Economic and Business Historical Society, the Association for Evolutionary Economics, the Southern Economic Association, and the Social Science History Association, among many others.
In light of his exceptional achievements in higher education and economics, Dr. Stabile was honored with the Unsung Hero Award from the Maryland chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 2006. A native of New York City, he enjoys bicycling, running, sailing and reading in his spare time.
