Dr. Hitchins has worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an associate professor and professor of history since 1967 and a professor of Eastern European history since 1969. Prior to this appointment, he was an assistant professor of history at Rice University in Houston from 1965 to 1967, and an instructor and assistant professor of history at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina from 1958 to 1965. He was also a lecturer at the University of Bucharest in Romania in 2015. In addition to his teaching roles, Dr. Hitchins has been a consultant for the joint committee on Eastern Europe of the American Council of Learned Societies and Social Science Research Council from 1982 to 1989, and for the International Research and Exchanges Board from 1970 to 1979.
Dr. Hitchins earned a Bachelor of Arts from Union College in his hometown of Schenectady, New York in 1952. The following year, he went on to receive a Master of Arts from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1964. Dr. Hitchins has also been awarded eight honorary Doctor of Philosophy degrees from various universities across Romania, including the University of Bucharest, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, West University of Timișoara, University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Târgu Mureș, 1 Decembrie 1918 University at Alba Iulia, Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, and Babeș-Bolyai University, among others.
Dr. Hitchins' knowledge about the National Movements helped him get into Romanian studies. He is an honorary member of the Romanian Academy, and is a proficient speaker in several languages such as Italian, Kurdish, Tajik, Romanian, Hungarian, French, Spanish, and German. He has also authored numerous books on Romanian and Eastern European history and has been a consultant for Encyclopedia Iranica. Dr. Hitchins was awarded two National Order for Merits from the president of Romania in 2000 and 2016, and has been listed in three editions of Who's Who in America.
