Mr. Secosky taught as a high school science teacher at Bloomfield Central School in New York between 1971 and 1998. Coaching the wrestling team for 10 of those years, he was also involved by conducting geology field trips to Colorado, Utah and Arizona and running support groups for students with drug or alcohol problems. Mr. Secosky simultaneously taught academia as an adjunct instructor at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, NY, between 1979 and 2009, where he spent many years as a microbiology technician, and was an adjunct professor at Portland State University between 1995 and 1997. Furthermore, he taught classes at the Rochester Museum and Science Center for nine years beginning in 1989 and was a contributing writer for "Holt Science and Technology Earth Science" during 2001.
Although Mr. Secosky no longer teaches, he continues to focus his time as a scientist. Getting into astronomy while living in southwestern Pennsylvania's countryside, he was always tremendously curious about the field. A member of the Planetary Society, he is also a member of the Mars Society, and served as a crew biologist, geologist and executive officer for a Mars simulation through the Mars Society. Notably, Mr. Secosky was the first amateur to use the Hubble Space Telescope, and he has used the Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as an amateur.
During Mr. Secosky's career, he has served as a consultant on water quality for Lee Drake Environmental Consultant and has spoken at several conferences on behalf of the Science Teacher's Association of New York State and at conventions of the National Science Teachers Association, the Mars Society and the Rochester Academy of Science. He has given more than 100 public talks on Hubble Space Telescope discoveries between 1991 and 2008, has contributed articles to professional publications, contributed hundreds of articles to Wikipedia, and produced eight 30-minute astronomy programs and one 30-minute program on Science of Judo for the local cable access channel.
Locally, Mr. Secosky was involved on the board of directors of the Never Alone Club, a youth prevention club in Bloomfield, for over two decades between 1991 and 2007. He was also a volunteer for summer camps and a lector at St. Dominic Church for over 30 years. The recipient of a Marian S. Hallock Award in 1989 from Bloomfield Central School, Professional Excellence Award from California University of Pennsylvania in 1994, and a John Q. Award from the Council of Alcoholism in 1994, Mr. Secosky also won Third Place for designing an experiment for a space shuttle in a Popular Mechanics' contest. He has been included in the third edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education.
Mr. Secosky holds a Bachelor of Science in secondary education and biology from California State University and a Master of Arts in biology from State University of New York at Genesco. He is a certified teacher in general science, biology, chemistry and earth science in the state of New York.
