Dr. Marcus began his professional career as an assistant professor at Marquette University from 1970 to 1974. He traveled south to become the program manager of analytical chemistry at the Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City, MO, from 1974 to 1978. From there, he worked as the manager of analytical chemistry at Stauffer Chemical Company in Farmington, CT, from 1978 to 1983, and then as the senior director of analytical/technology programs at the Waste Management Technology Center in Chicago, IL, from 1983 to 1992. He then became vice president of analytical and technology services with U.S. Pollution Control, Inc., for one year before serving as vice president of chemical operations at Huntingdon Engineering and Environmental in Middleport, NY, from 1993 to 1995. Finally, he served as vice president of quality, health, and safety at Recra Environmental, Inc., in Amherst, NY, from 1995 to 1998 and then manager of the Hanford Analytical Services Project with Fluor Hanford in Richland, WA, from 1998 until his retirement in 2008. He was also on the board of directors for the International Environmental Analytical Testing Laboratories in Arlington, VA, from 1990 to 1993.
Dr. Marcus studied at Carleton College from 1962 to 1964 before earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Iowa in 1968. He went on to receive a Doctor of Chemistry from Kansas State University in 1970. Since graduating, he has been a member on the committee on publications of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) since 1993, among several other associations. He has also contributed to 27 publications including journal articles, EPA project reports, book chapters, and ASTM methods and standard technical publications, and has given 50 presentations at national meetings and both platform and invited presentations.
Dr. Marcus has been awarded a number of accolades for his contributions to his field, including two Certificates of Appreciation from the Department of Energy Headquarters and three Certificates of Appreciation from the Department of Energy Richland Operations Office, among others. He is recognized for his organization of one of top ten environmental commercial laboratory networks and the largest non-commercial environmental laboratory networks, and for the development of the first multi-analyte protocols for organic identification and quantification using GC/MS. He is listed in the third edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
