A former dean and professor at the School of Law at Duke University, Mr. Carrington became a professor emeritus in 2016 after teaching on campus for 38 years. As dean between 1978 and 1988, he was instrumental in developing international connections for the university, especially in China and Japan, beginning with the establishment of Nixon scholarships for Chinese students in 1980. While teaching, he further represented many clients via pro bono, supporting their claims to civil liberties, assisted in the advancement of claims by classes on plaintiffs and served in a number of capacities relating to law reform. Furthermore, Mr. Carrington has addressed multiple international meetings since 2003 relating to private enforcement of public law in the U.S., in particular the transnational corrupt practices.
Mr. Carrington formerly taught at the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Indiana University, the University of Wyoming and Harvard University. He also held visiting appointments at nearly a dozen other American law schools and has taught in five foreign universities. Additionally, Mr. Carrington has given lectures at more than 100 other law schools in the United States and abroad.
In the field, Mr. Carrington has served as a reporter for the civil rules advisory committee for the Judicial Conference of the United States between 1985 and 1993 and served as the president of the Private Adjudication Center, Inc. between 1988 and 1994, where he also held the post of chairman between 1995 and 2002. Active with numerous other causes, he more recently participated in the organization of a Carolina Council on Drug Policy in 2011, which is seeking to resolve the violent war on drugs within the state. Mr. Carrington formerly upheld his own private practice for a short time during the mid-1950s as well.
The author/editor of seven books, multiple symposia and over 100 scholarly articles in legal publications, Mr. Carrington has written on topics such as civil procedure, legal education, contracts, criminal law, constitutional law, comparative law and the history of the legal profession. His most recent books have included "Autobiography: A Lucky Lawyer's Life" in 2014 and "Transnational Corrupt Practices" in 2013. An elected fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Bar Foundation, Mr. Carrington is also a longtime member of the American Bar Association and the American Law Institute.
Following in the footsteps of his father, who was also an attorney, Mr. Carrington first earned an undergraduate degree at the University of Texas in 1952 and Bachelor of Laws at Harvard University. Upon earning his law degree, he served in the United States Army between 1955 and 1957 and in the United States Army Reserves between 1957 and 1961. He has since been admitted to the State Bar of Texas, Ohio State Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and the Maryland State Bar Association. A Guggenheim Fellow from 1988 to 1989, Mr. Carrington has been cited in nearly 60 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
