Dr. Nair was inspired to pursue a career in medical science after growing up around family members in the medical and health sciences field. As a child in India, he watched his relatives study in England and the United States and then return home, which influenced his future academic and professional goals. When he became of age, Dr. Nair studied at the University of London, where he received a Doctor of Philosophy in medicine. He was then accepted to train in the United States at the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois, where he served as a research associate. Dr. Nair was also a member of the faculties of the University of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology before he spent the remainder of his career in various positions at Michael Reese Hospital Medical Center and at the Chicago Medical School, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. He retired as emeritus vice president, dean emeritus and distinguished professor. Throughout his career, he has held professorships in pharmacology, biochemistry and therapeutics. Most notably, he also held the administrative position of dean of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Vice President for Research at Chicago Medical School, Rosalind Franklin University. In addition to his endeavors at the Chicago Medical School, he was also a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard University.
For his contributions to the fields of radiation and perinatal pharmacology, and circadian rhythms in drug action, Dr. Nair received a Doctor of Science in the Faculty of Science from the University of London, which is the highest degree the university offers. In 2003, he received an honorary doctorate from the Chicago Medical School. In addition, his professional expertise also earned him the Morris Parker Award for distinction in medical research from the Chicago Medical School. He is an elected member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Sigma Xi, and the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and the New York Academy of Sciences.
Other professional societies Dr. Nair was elected to membership include the American Association of University Professors, the International Society for Developmental Neuroscience, the American College of Toxicology, the International Society for Chronobiology, the Society for Neuroscience, the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, the Pan American Medical Association, Royal Institute of Chemistry, the American Chemical Society, the Society of Toxicology, the Radiation Research Society, the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, the International Society of Biochemical Pharmacology, and the International Brain Research Organization. Dr. Nair serves as a reviewer for various professional journals and national granting agencies.
His research contributions span a wide range of interests and include central nervous system pharmacology, developmental pharmacology, radiation pharmacology and chronopharmacology. He is the author of over 100 publications. Among his research associates and postdoctoral fellows are a chairman of pharmacology, professors of pharmacology, a professor of psychiatry, and a professor of pathology.
Dr. Nair is married to Jo Ann nee Burk. Mrs. Nair served on the nursing faculty at Triton College. They have three children: Dev (Ph.D., Psychol. M.P.H.), Lawrence (M.D., Cardiologist) and Sharon (B.A., B.S., Physical Therapy) and six grandchildren.
