Dr. Orenstein has worked as a Full Professor of Comparative Literature and The Study of Women and Men in Society (now Gender Studies Program) at the University of Southern California since 1982. During this time, she was also on the board of directors at the Women's Building in 1984. Prior to these appointments, she was an Assistant Professor of English at Douglass College of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, from 1974 to 1980, during which time she was also the Chair of Women's Studies from 1976 to 1978. In concurrence with her teaching positions, she was the co-founder of The Cerridwen Feminist Salon in the Multi-Arts from 1979 to 1980 and the Woman's Salon for Literature from 1974 to 1984, both in New York City, and was also the co-creator of the Ecofeminist Conference at the University of Southern California in 1979.
Dr. Orenstein earned a Bachelor of Arts from Brandeis University in 1959 and later received a Master of Arts from the prestigious Harvard University in 1961. She went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy from New York University in 1971. She has been an Executive Member of Comparative Literature and Other Arts of the Modern Language Association, and has traveled around the world to participate in several conferences in such countries as Canada, Ireland, Kenya, Denmark, Australia, Israel, and Holland, among others. She has also been the subject of a documentary entitled "Gloria's Call," presented by the Women's Caucus for Art in 2018, and has authored three books: "The Theatre of the Marvelous: Surrealism and the Contemporary Stage," "The Reflowering of the Goddess" and "Reweaving the World: The Emergence of Ecofeminism."
The Women's Caucus of the College Art Association awarded Dr. Orenstein a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, and she has also been presented with the VESTA Award by the Women's Building. Additionally, she received a Graduate Fellowship for Women from the Danforth Foundation from 1964 through the completion of her Doctorate in 1971, and was awarded a Certificate of Honor by the Veteran Feminists of America. She is listed in the 20th edition of Who's Who in the West.
