Roger Snedden Carlsmith was presented with Marie Francois Sadi Carnot Medal for Achievements in Energy Conservation Research from the United States Department of Energy in 1996.

With more than 40 years of industry experience to his credit, Mr. Carlsmith is currently retired, having most recently worked as the acting associate director for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1991 to 1994. Prior to this appointment, he served Oak Ridge National Laboratory as program director from 1983 to 1991, section head from 1972 to 1983, section manager from 1970 to 1978 and progressive director of conservation and renewable energy from 1978 to 1994. Previously, he held the position of group leader for Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1962 to 1972. Mr. Carlsmith began his career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a research engineer from 1950 to 1962.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Carlsmith completed service in the United States Air Force from 1943 to 1946, holding the rank of sergeant prior to his honorable discharge. Following this accomplishment, he pursued an education at Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, cum laude, in 1948. Mr. Carlsmith concluded his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960, graduating with a Master of Science in chemical engineering.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Carlsmith has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has contributed to the Tennessee Governor's Energy Task Force from 1972 to 1974, the advisory committee for the Federal Power Commission in 1973, and on the board of directors for the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. Furthermore, he has been associated with the Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning. Mr. Carlsmith found success with his written works as well, having co-authored "World Energy Conference Survey of Energy Resources" in 1974.

In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Carlsmith remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has notably maintained involvement with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Mr. Carlsmith was also an active member of the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Carlsmith has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was presented with Marie Francois Sadi Carnot Medal for Achievements in Energy Conservation Research from the United States Department of Energy in 1996. Mr. Carlsmith was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
