With more than 30 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Salzmann is currently retired, having most recently worked as a professor in the department of anthropology in the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1968 to 1989, during which time he also excelled as an adjunct professor in the department of Slavic languages and literature from 1975 to 1989. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of instructor for Phillips Exeter Academy from 1966 to 1968. Previously, he served Verde Valley School as headmaster from 1963 to 1966. Dr. Salzmann began his career as a teacher at Verde Valley School from 1956 to 1963.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Salzmann pursued an education at Realgynasium in Prague, Czechoslovakia, earning an Abitur in 1944. He continued his academic efforts with an Absolutorium at Charles University in Prague in 1948. Following these accomplishments, he obtained a Master of Arts at Indiana University in 1949. Dr. Salzmann concluded his studies at Indiana University in 1963, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Salzmann has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Since 1949, he has contributed to the Arapaho Indians in Wyoming as a language and culture consultant. Additionally, he held the roles of visiting professor for Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in 1970, visiting lecturer for the University of Pittsburgh in 1982, and visiting professor for Yale University in 1983. Between 1989 and 2013, Dr. Salzmann was a part-time teacher for Northern Arizona University.
Dr. Salzmann found success with his written works as well, having authored several editions of such published books as "Anthropology" in 1969, 1973, and 1977, "The Arapaho Indians: A Research Guide and Bibliography" in 1988, and "Language, Culture and Society: An Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology" in 1993, 1998, and 2004. He has further co-authored "Komarov: A Czech Farming Village" in 1974 and 1986 and "Humanity and Culture: An Introduction to Anthropology" in 1978. A compiler for the "Dictionary of Contemporary Arapaho Usage" in 1983, Dr. Salzmann has penned numerous articles on Arapaho and Czech language and culture for many esteemed journals.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Salzmann remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences. Likewise, Dr. Salzmann has been a lifetime member of the Linguistic Society of America.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Salzmann has accrued a number of accolades throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as a fellow of the American Anthropological Association and as a ceremonially-named Arapaho Chief in 1985. He has been presented with grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the International Research and Exchanges Board, Fulbright-Hays, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Philosophical Society. Dr. Salzmann was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East.
