Katherine Paterson is perhaps best known for her award-winning 1977 novel "Bridge to Terabithia," which has been adapted into films in 1985 and 2007.

With nearly 40 published books to her name, Dr. Paterson has found much success with her written works, having most recently authored "My Brigadista Year" in 2017. Perhaps best known for her award-winning 1977 novel "Bridge to Terabithia," which has been adapted into films in 1985 and 2007 and has been featured in English studies classes around the globe. Her other notable novels include "Jacob Have I Loved" in 1980, "The Master Puppeteer" in 1975, "The Same Stuff as Stars" in 2002, "Lyddie" in 1991 and "The Great Gilly Hopkins" in 1978, the latter two of which also received feature film adaptations. Furthermore, Dr. Paterson has shown exemplary versatility as an author, having penned fiction, non-fiction, picture books, short story collections, and novels in multiple languages.

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Paterson held the position of master of sacred studies and English at the Pennington School from 1963 to 1965. Previously, she served as a missionary for the Presbyterian Church in Japan from 1957 to 1961. Dr. Paterson began her career as a teacher at Lovettsville Elementary School from 1954 to 1955.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Paterson pursued an education at King University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English, summa cum laude, in 1954. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Arts in 1957 at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. Following these accomplishments, she obtained a Master of Religious Education from Union Theological Seminary in 1962.

Dr. Paterson has further received Doctor of Humane Letters designation from Otterbein College in 1979, Norwich University in 1990, Mount Saint Vincent University in 1994 and Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2016. She additionally holds Doctor of Letters from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in 1981, Washington & Lee University in 1982, University of Maryland in 1982, Shenandoah College in 1982, and Hope College in 1997. Likewise, Dr. Paterson garnered a Doctor of Literature from Presbyterian College in 2002 and a Doctor of Fine Arts from Champlain College in 2016.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Paterson has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. From 2010 to 2011, she was associated with the Library of Congress as a national ambassador for young people's literature. A two-time jury chair for the National Book Awards, she contributed to the Vermont College of Fine Arts as trustee on the board of trustees. Dr. Paterson holds the role of vice president for the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance.

In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Paterson remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She has maintained involvement with the Authors Guild and the Children's Book Guild of Washington, D.C. Moreover, Dr. Paterson is a lifetime member for the International Board on Books for Young People and the Alida Cutts lifetime member of the United States Board on Books for Young People.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Paterson has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. She was presented with Laura Ingalls Wilder Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the Association for Library Service to Children in 2013, the James & Elizabeth Jeffords Award from Everybody Wins! USA in 2007, the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature from World Literature Today in 2007, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award from the Swedish Arts Council in 2006 and the Hans Christian Andersen Award from the International Board of Books for Young People in 1998. She was bestowed with the Anne V. Zarrow Award for Young Readers' Literature from the Tulsa City-County Library in 1993, the Friend of Education Award from the National Education Association in 1993, the New England Book Award from the New England Independent Booksellers Association in 1992, the Regina Medal from the Catholic Library Association in 1988 and the Children's Literature Award from the Keene State College in 1987. She procured the Regina Medal from the Catholic Library Association in 1988, Colorado Blue Spruce Young Adult Book Award in 1986, a Medallion from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1983, the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota in 1983, and the Scott O'Dell Award for Children's Literature in 1982. Dr. Paterson was also rewarded with the John Newbery Medal from the Association for Library Service to Children in 1977 and 1981, the Janusz Korczak Medal in 1981, the Silver Pencil Award in 1981, the National Book Award from the National Book Foundation in 1977 and 1979, and the Edgar Allen Poe Special Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1977.

Dr. Paterson has been celebrated as a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000, a Literary Light by the Boston Public Library in 2000, a Lion of The New York Public Library in 1998, and an Outstanding Alumnus of King's College from 1993 to 1994. She has been recognized with the Union Medal from the Union Theological Seminary, the Jefferson Cup of Virginia Library Association, the Parents' Choice Gold Medal, the Horn Book Picture Book Award from the Boston Globe, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Massachusetts Reading Association. With "Bridge to Terabitihia" featured among the All-Time Best Children's Novels by the School Library Journal in 2012, her work has been honored by the American Library Association with many Notable Children's Books and Best Book for Young Adults designations. Dr. Paterson was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in 20th Century America, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in America: Student Version, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women.
