Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A prolific writer, Magowan has made many contributions to several fields of literature. Other works include a number of limited edition chapbooks produced in collaboration with the artists, Samuel Buri, John Digby and Virgil Burnett.

A widely published essayist and reviewer, Magowan has also written extensively on plants and rock gardening. He edited his brother Stephen's, A Life in Letters.

Throughout his career he has associated with visual artists. A lyricist as a poet, "la musique avant toute chose," he profited from an early interest in Greek rebetiko trance dancing and Middle Eastern modal music.
