For nearly 45 years, Dr. Vandiver has excelled in engineering and education. At the start of his career in the mid-1970s, he joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as an assistant professor. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, working as associate professor, professor, and dean for undergraduate research as well. He maintains his positions as professor and dean to this day, while also serving as founder and director of MIT's Edgerton Center, which aims to provide students with the resources needed to pursue their own creative projects. Years ago, with Amy Smith, they also founded the MIT D-Lab program. D-Lab engages students in challenging projects that help the developing world regarding health, clean water, education, energy and agriculture. Throughout his career, he has contributed his extensive knowledge to numerous journal articles and conference proceedings regarding structural dynamics and flow-induced vibration. Ocean engineers around the world use his computer software, known as SHEAR7, to predict the fatigue life of long cylinders and pipelines, exposed to ocean currents.
An expert in his field, Dr. Vandiver holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering from Harvey Mudd College, a Master of Science in ocean engineering from MIT, and a Doctor of Philosophy in oceanographic engineering from MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, as well as many others.
Recently, Dr. Vandiver has been working with the Golden West Foundation. He is assisting the foundation's country director in Cambodia in developing new techniques for training people when it comes to removing unexploded bombs and mines. As a graduate student, he had the honor of having one of his photographs published on the cover of Nature Magazine; it was his first professional publication. Additionally, he has been recognized with the MacVicar Award for Excellence in Teaching, the President's Award for Community Service and the Arthur C. Smith Award for Contributions to Student Life and Learning from MIT, as well as inclusion in four editions of Who's Who in America. Looking ahead, Dr. Vandiver intends to experience the continued success of his career with MIT.
