With more than 45 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Alan Randall has been recognized by the Ohio State University as professor emeritus since 2010, academy professor since 2014, and a resident scholar since 2015, as well as an honorary professor at the University of Sydney since 2014. During this time, he had held the position of professor and department head at the University of Sydney from 2011 to 2014. Previously, he served The Ohio State University as a professor from 1985 to 2010 and chair of the department of agricultural, environmental and development economics from 1998 to 2010. Dr. Randall began his career as an assistant professor at New Mexico State University from 1970 to 1974 before moving to the University of Kentucky where he was promoted to professor in 1977 and served until 1985. He held the role of visiting professor at the University of Chicago in 1981 and the University of New England in 1980.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Randall pursued an education at the University of Sydney, earning a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics in 1965. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science in agricultural economics at the University of Sydney in 1969. He concluded his studies at Oregon State University in 1970, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Randall was awarded honorary doctorates from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in 1997 and the University of Sydney in 2004.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Randall has provided his expertise to illuminate issues of public policy. He served on the National Research Council standing committee on human dimensions of global change from 2000 to 20005, on various NRC topical panels as chair from 1978 to 1980 and member from 1999 to 1991 and from 1995 to 1999, and on a Council for Agricultural Science and Technology panel from 1988 to 1990. He chaired the standing external review panel for the CSIRO Australian National Outlook Project from 2013 to 2015. Dr. Randall has been active in external consulting, completing many assignments including several pioneering projects in natural resources damage assessment under the Superfund legislation. He found success with his written works as well, having authored "Resource Economics," fourth edition in 2016, "Risk and Precaution" in 2011, "Making the Environment Count" in 1999, "Valuation of Wildlands Resources" in 1984, myriad articles for esteemed journals, and many chapters for scholarly books and anthologies. He taught classroom courses to undergraduate and graduate students from 1970 to 2013 and supervised thirty PhD students to completion.
A leader in professional organizations in his areas of expertise, Dr. Randall served the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society as president from 2014 to 2015 and director from 2013 to 2016. Dr. Randall was also active with the American Agricultural Economics Association as director from 2004 to 2006 and foundation president from 2002 to 2003.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Randall has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. A fellow of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society, and the American Agricultural Economics Association, he was recognized as a University Distinguished Scholar by the Ohio State University in 1997. His work has been further honored as the Publication of Enduring Quality by the Association of Environmental & Resource Economics in 1991, Publication of Enduring Quality in 1990, and Outstanding Journal Article by the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association in 1973. He was also presented with the University Award for Distinguished Faculty Service for the Ohio State University in 1999. Dr. Randall was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
