With 45 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Paulos has worked with Paulos-Toronto Sports Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and the Physicians Group of Utah since 2012. Previously, he has held many academic, administrative and clinical positions in the orthopedic and sports medicine in recent years, notably including the Andrews-Paulos Research & Education Institute, Reconstructive Orthopedic Center in Houston, Texas, Baylor College of Medicine, and Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. From 1985 to 2008, Dr. Paulos further excelled as medical director for the Orthopedic Biomechanics Institute.
Additionally, Dr. Paulos has served as an orthopedic surgeon for a variety of sports teams throughout his career, including the Utah Warriors from 2003 to 2005, Real Salt Lake from 2004 to 2005, Snow Bears from 2004 to 2005, and the Salt Lake City Trappers from 1987 to 1990. He has further served in many posts for the Orthopedic Specialty Hospital between 1991 and 2003, the University of Utah between 1983 and 1992, the University of Cincinnati from 1979 to 1981, and the University of South Alabama. Dr. Paulos began his career as a resident in orthopedic surgery at the University of Utah from 1974 to 1978, and an intern for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center from 1973 to 1974.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Paulos pursued an education at the University of Utah, earning a Bachelor of Science in zoology, cum laude, in 1969. He concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Medicine in 1973, also at the University of Utah. He concluded his studies with a certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 1980. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Paulos was licensed to practice medicine in Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, California, and Washington.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Paulos has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. In 1979, he completed service with the United States Air Force Reserve, holding the rank of major prior to his honorable discharge. He has also held the role of visiting professor for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Henry Ford Hospital, Brown University, the National Naval Medical Center and the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, among others. Dr. Paulos has contributed to myriad presentations as well, and holds a variety of patents.
Dr. Paulos has found much success with his written works, having been appointed to the International Consulting Editorial Board for the Journal of Sports Traumatology and the Editorial Boards of Operative Techniques in Sports Medicine, Orthopedic and Sports Medicine News, the American Journal of Knee Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, and Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review. On the Editorial Advisory Board of Techniques and Orthopedics Journal and the Arthroscopic Editorial Board for Sports Medicine News, he has held limited editorial positions for Techniques in Orthopedics in 1988, 1989, 1999, and 2001. Likewise, Dr. Paulos has authored many articles for esteemed journals such as the Western Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery, and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Paulos remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American Orthopedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. An honorary member of the Argentine Association of Arthroscopy, he was also active with the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science, the International Musculoskeletal Laser Society, the International Society for the Knee, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopedic Sports Medicine and the International Cartilage Repair Society. On the Board of Directors for the Utah Museum of National History from 1990 to 1994, Dr. Paulos was a member of the Herodicus Society, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Utah State Medical Association, the Western Orthopedic Association, and many committees in relations to these institutions.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Paulos has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He has been recognized as a Sports Medicine European Traveling Fellow by the American Academy of Orthopedic Sports Medicine in 2005, a European Traveling Fellow by the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine in 1986, a Clinical Fellow by the Atlanta Sports Medicine Foundation in 1978 and a Research and Clinical Fellow by the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in 1979. A renowned All-American student athlete for the University of Utah, who honored him as an Outstanding Student Athlete between 1967 and 1969, he was presented with the O'Donoghue Research Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in 1987, the 3M Health Care Award for Applied Science in 1993, and the President's Challenge Award from the National Athletic Trainers' Association in 2000. Dr. Paulos was selected for inclusion in the Cyprus High School Hall of Fame in 1999 as well as Physiotherapy Sports Medicine in 2006.
