Don Perl's wish to speak up and be a force of vocal good has come into play several times throughout his career.

Passionate about his academic endeavors, Mr. Perl earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from the University of Rochester in 1964. He followed this accomplishment with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Syracuse University in 1967 and a Master of Arts in Spanish from the University of Northern Colorado in 2001. Mr. Perl's decision to pursue academia was motivated by a wish to help the underrepresented and can be accredited to Holocaust survivors he knew while growing up. This wish to speak up and be a force of vocal good has come into play several times throughout his career, and he notably refused to administer high-stakes standardized testing at one point due to his belief that it was educational malpractice.
Hoping to use his bilingualism to help Spanish-speaking people in his area, Mr. Perl was an adjunct professor of Spanish at the University of Northern Colorado from 2002 to 2018. He founded the Coalition for Better Education, Inc., in Greeley, CO, in 2002 and taught in Greeley Public Schools from 1982 to 2001, after starting out at Englewood Public School District in 1981. Mr. Perl also participated in the University of Northern Colorado's Green Party Association as a faculty advisor from 2004 to 2006, and in 2004, the Green Party asked him to run for governor on their ticket. He contributed a book chapter to "Educational Courage: Resisting the Ambush of Public Education" in 2012.
Due to his professional drive and commitment to his calling, Mr. Perl was named Outstanding Professor in 2007 and 2008 by the Delta Zeta Society and was honored by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in 2017, among other recognitions. He sponsored the ballot initiative for the Coalition for Better Education, Inc., in 2004 and petitioned the Death with Dignity ballot initiative in 2016, exhibiting unwavering commitment to his social principles. Interested in remaining informed of professional changes, Mr. Perl maintains a lifelong membership with the Greeley Education Association.
