Beginning as a staff nurse for the obstetrics-gynecology unit at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park, IL, and St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, IL, she also worked as a nurse, health counselor and consultant for Catholic Charities in Chicago, IL, and was a substitute school nurse for both the Reavis High School and Lincoln-Way High School in Frankfort, IL, and for the Huntley School District #158. Ms. Nykiel also owned and operated For Teen Moms Only for several years.
A speaker in her field, Ms. Nykiel has served as a volunteer organizer for the school nursing program at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, volunteer childbirth educator at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, IL, and volunteer childbirth life skills educator at Shepherds House in New Lenox, IL. She is the author of the 2014 book "No One Told Me I Could Cry: For the Young Wounded by Abortion," which was based on a young pregnant girl whom she met who had spoken those words. She also authored "After the Loss of Your Baby: For Teen Mothers" and "What It Takes: A Survival Guide for Young and Teen Dads to Be," and co-authored "Manual Para La Educacion Reproductiva y Salud Integral de Adolescente," which translates to "Manual for Reproductive Education and Comprehensive Health of Adolescents" in English.
A longtime member of several professional organizations, including the International Childbirth Educators Association and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, Ms. Nykiel understands the importance of continued education the field of health care. Cited in Who's Who in American Nursing and Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals and a 1990 March of Dimes grantee, she also received an Outstanding Student Award for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average at the University of St. Francis in 1989, the same year she completed a Bachelor of Science in health arts. Ms. Nykiel previously earned a Diploma from the Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital. She is a registered nurse, certified childbirth educator and certified Lamaze teen specialist and held a natural family planning certificate through the Couple to Couple League.
