An independent artist with a knack for creativity, Mr. Riggs has created magnificent art throughout his career. He studied history at Parsons College in Fairfield, IA, before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Southern Illinois University in 1976. Mr. Riggs has exhibited his art throughout the United States and Europe, currently having his art included in several museums' permanent collections.
Mr. Riggs is in the permanent collections at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where one of his pieces is featured; The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA, a large museum featuring 11 of his pieces; and The Tampa Museum in Florida, where two of his pieces are featured. Internationally, his work is featured in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre, France. An expressive and engaging artist, Mr. Riggs creates primarily abstract art, working with several mediums including photography, watercolor, gouache and oil.
In addition to having his work featured in permanent collections, Mr. Riggs has held one man shows at numerous locations. Domestic locations include The Figge Art Museum in Davenport, IA, The Cornell Fine Arts Museum in Winter Park, FL, the Artspace Museum in Richmond, VA, and Crocker's Mark Gallery in Raleigh, NC. Mr. Riggs has held one man shows at international locations as well, including the United Nations in Rome, Italy, La Mama Galleria in Spoleto, Italy, and the British Embassy in Rome, and Barbuda.
As well as displaying his art, Mr. Riggs has held other roles. He served as a radioman and second class petty officer for the United States Navy from 1968 to 1972. During his time in Atlanta, he served as the director of photography for the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center for the Callanwolde Foundation, Inc., from 1980 to 1981. He has also lent his time and talents as a guest critic for the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997. Furthermore, Mr. Riggs has been a lecturer for The Cornell Fine Arts Museum in 1990 and the Museum of Art and Science in Daytona Beach, FL, in 1989.
Mr. Riggs has always believed that it is important to explore the next stage of artistic curiosity. He believes in utilizing both old and new tools and that perseverance is the key to reinventing one's voice. Mr. Riggs strives to experiment with new artistic styles while consistently preserving his own artistic vision. A talented artist, Mr. Riggs has been recognized for his accomplishments and contributions to the field. He received grants from the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs in 1983 and the National Endowment for the Arts from 1981 to 1983.
