A veteran of 60 years' professional experience, Dr. Gordon serves as a professor of keyboard studies at the Thornton School of Music of the University of Southern California. At the start of his career, he joined Wilmington College as an assistant professor. Subsequently, he served as a faculty member and academic administrator at the University of Maryland and Queens College, where he was Provost and Vice-President of Academic Affairs. Over the years he has toured as a pianist, having played concerts in Asia, the Middle East, North America and Europe. He founded and directed New York's Cultural Heritage and Great Gospel competitions, as well as the William Kapell International Piano Competition, and in Savannah, Georgia, the Savannah Onstage festival and the American Traditions Competition.
A former lieutenant junior grade in the U. S. Navy, Dr. Gordon holds a diploma from the Saarbrücken State Conservatory of Music, where he studied with the world-famous pianist Walter Gieseking. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Drama and a Master of Arts in Musicology from the University of Kansas, as well as a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the Eastman School of Music. He is the author of several books: "Etudes for Piano Teachers, Essays on the Teachers Art," "A History of Keyboard Music for the Piano and Its Forerunners," "Mastering the Art of Performance," "Planning Your Piano Success, and "Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas." He has produced recent critical editions of the Beethoven piano sonatas, the Debussy Etudes, and the Mozart piano sonatas. A composer for musical theater, he has seen successful productions of shows in New York, Hollywood, Savannah and Hawaii. His academic honors include Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Scabbard and Blade (military). He received lifetime achievement awards from state music teacher organizations in Maryland and California. Additionally, he has been included in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the World and the 57th through 62nd editions of Who's Who in America. Currently, Dr. Gordon continues in his role as a professor at the University of Southern California.
