Dr. Crawford began his career as an English teacher at Eastern Greene High School in Grand Junction, IA, from 1959 to 1960. He worked as an English teacher at Jefferson Junior High School in Iowa from 1960 to 1962 and he was active as an instructor at Clinton Community College in Iowa from 1962 to 1966. From 1966 to 1967, he was an instructor at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. He served as assistant professor at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AR, from 1967 to 1968. He continued his career with Henderson State University as an associate professor from 1968 to 1973 and as a full professor from 1973 to 1997. During this time, he also held the position of chair of the English department at Henderson State University from 1976 to 1986. Since 1997, Dr. Crawford has been a professor emeritus of Henderson State University, and he maintained involvement with Henderson State University as an adjunct professor from 1997 to 2007.
In addition to his career, Dr. Crawford has been published in numerous professional journals and periodicals from 1968 to 2007. He has also published a number of books comprising of both academic writing and poetry. His academic works include "Romantic Criticism of Shakespearian Drama," published in 1968, "Costerus: Essays on English and American Literature" in 1978, "Early Shakespearean Actresses" in 1984, and "The Learning, Wit and Wisdom of Shakespeare's Renaissance Women," in 1997. Dr. Crawford's books of poetry include "Making the Connection" in 1989, the chapbook "Just off Highway 71" in 1992, "I Have Become Familiar with the Rain" in 1995, "French Quarter at Eight" in 2008 and "Female Voices from the Bible" in 2017.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Crawford received a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia in 1959. Following these accomplishments, he earned a Master of Science from Drake University in Des Moines, IA, in 1962. He concluded his education with a Doctor of Education from Oklahoma State University in 1968.
Dr. Crawford was a draftee of the United States Army in 1958, and in 1984, he co-founded the Arkadelphia Little Theatre. He is a member of the South Central Renaissance Conference, the Arkansas Philological Association, the South Central Modern Language Association, Phi Sigma Epsilon, Theta Alpha Phi and Phi Delta Kappa. He additionally belongs to the American Legion in Hot Springs, AR, where he has held the positions of publicity officer and chaplain. He is also a member of the College English Association, where he served on the nomination committee from 1984 to 1986, was treasurer of the South Central branch from 1978 to 1980, and was president of the South Central branch from 1980 to 1981. Dr. Crawford is an officer of the Poets' Roundtable of Arkansas and the Ozark Writers' League, and he has contributed to his local Methodist church as an organist.
From 1963 to 2018, Dr. Crawford has been the recipient of numerous poetry prizes from such groups as the Iowa Poetry Association, the Ohio Poetry Association, the Arizona State Poetry Society, the Poets' Roundtable of Arkansas, the Ozark Writers' League, the Alabama State Poetry Society and the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc., among many others. He was honored with the Sybil Nash Abrams Award in 1982, 1995, and 1998. In 1988, he was presented with the Merit Award for Service from the Poets' Roundtable of Arkansas, and in 1997, he received the Scholar/Teacher Award from the South Central branch of the College English Association. He was named Fraternity Advisor of the Year by Henderson State University in 2000, and in 2007, he was the recipient of the Grand Prize from the International Poetry Society. In 2012, he was awarded the Arkansas Senate Citation for volunteer services. Dr. Crawford has previously been selected for inclusion in the 20th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest and the eighth edition of Who's Who in America.
