In 1998, Dr. Dobson retired from his position as an adjunct staff member at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Arlington, VA, where he had worked since 1990. Prior to holding this position, he served as a research staff member at the same institute beginning in 1963. Leading up to these roles, he was a senior technology specialist at North America Aviation in Columbus, OH, from 1959 to 1963. Five years before taking this position, Dr. Dobson worked in Great Neck, NY, as a senior engineer at Sperry Gyroscope Company. In 1952, he served as an engineer at Industrial Research Products in Franklin Park, IL. His first professional post was as a research associate at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, from 1951 to 1954.
Beginning in 1963, he worked for a nonprofit in Washington, DC, in the defense department. He considers the highlight of his career to be his involvement with weapons systems analysis for the Pentagon during that time. In addition, he was a physics instructor at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY, in 1956. Dr. Dobson holds membership with such organizations as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu and Pi Mu Epsilon.
Dr. Dobson's academic pursuits began at Northwestern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1950. He continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he obtained a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1951. Ultimately, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from Northwestern University in 1955. His life-long passion for mathematics and later interest in physics and electricity are what led him to this career path.
