Prior to this appointment, he held the position of associate professor for the Texas Tech University Health Science Center from 1982 to 1992. Previously, he served the Cancer Research Center as a research associate in 1982, the University of Missouri as a research associate in the Department of Human Nutrition in 1981, Medico Industries, Inc. as the director of quality assurance from 1979 to 1980, and Sinclair Research Center as a research associate from 1976 to 1980. Dr. Williams began his career as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Anesthesia for the Institute of Enzyme Research from 1970 to 1973 and the University of Missouri in the Department of Medicine and Biochemistry from 1973 to 1976.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Williams pursued an education at the University of Missouri, earning a Bachelor of Science in agricultural education in 1957. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science in agricultural chemistry in 1967, also at the University of Missouri. Dr. Williams concluded his studies at the University of Missouri in 1968, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in agricultural chemistry.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Williams has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He contributed to the National Institutes of Health in 1973 and since 1991 and the Malignant Hyperthermia Symposium as chairman in 1985. From 1957 to 1962, he completed service with the United States Air Force, holding the rank of first lieutenant prior to his honorable discharge. Later, he held the role of captain in the United States Air Force Reserve. Holding multiple patents in his industry, Dr. Williams found success with his written works as well, having authored "R.W. Williams and N.T. Thomas and their Descendants in USA, 1669-1991" in 1991 and "Experimental Malignant Hyperthermia" in 1987, the latter of which he also edited.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Williams remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. From 1976 to 1980, he maintained involvement with the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Williams was also an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Biological Chemists and the American Physiological Society.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Williams has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as a postdoctoral fellow of the Institute of Enzyme Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1968 to 1970. Furthermore, he was presented with research grants from Organon International in 1989, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in 1989, Maruishi Pharmaceutical Company in 1988, the National Institutes of Health in 1988, and Genetech Inc. in 1988. In 1993, Dr. Williams was selected for inclusion in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
