Mr. Cohn celebrates more than 45 years of practicing real estate, finance, banking and private equity law in Philadelphia, New York City, Richmond, VA and Shanghai, China. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the Harvard Law School and studied for a year at the Harvard Business School. He was admitted to the bar in Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York in 1971, 1973 and 2005, respectively. He recently retired as a law partner of Troutman Sanders LLP in which he had chaired the Real Estate Development Practice Group. During his legal career, Mr. Cohn also taught as assistant professor of law at the University of Richmond School of Law and adjunct assistant professor of law at the William & Mary Law School, lectured at the University of Virginia Law School, lectured throughout the United States on legal topics for several professional organizations and served on six Virginia state boards and commissions as appointee or re-appointee of seven Virginia Governors of both political parties (including Chair of the Trustees of the Science Museum of Virginia and member of the Governor's Commission on Efficiency in Government and the Governor's Regulatory Reform Advisory Board). He also served as an Associate Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, member of the State Central Committee of the Democratic Party of Virginia and Chair or member of the boards of directors of many nonprofit organizations. Highlights of his legal practice included obtaining as clients, and representing for many years, the mid-Atlantic region of Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo Bank), the mid-Atlantic region of United Parcel Service (as real estate and environmental counsel) and the Virginia Retirement System (as real estate counsel).
In addition to extensive pro bono and community work, Mr. Cohn served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He also co-founded the Virginia Nonprofit Housing Coalition which now has a net worth exceeding $100 million. Through his work with this nonprofit, he developed expertise that he later used to help other nonprofits. After graduating the Harvard Law School, he served it in several capacities, including as Virginia Chair of the Harvard Law School Fund, Class Agent, a reunion co-Chair and member of an alumni committee that advised the law school on various topics. Outside his legal practice, Mr. Cohn authored several articles, including "How Our Economy Will Compete with China's" for Media General in The Richmond Times-Dispatch, "Cyberhousing" for the ACREL Newsletter, "Use of FIRREA to Make Low-Income Housing Available" for Probate and Property, the publication of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of the American Bar Association, and "Access to Television to Rebut the President - An Analysis and Proposal" for the Temple University Law Quarterly. He also edited a book on "The Residential Real Estate Transaction" and served for many years as the Real Estate Law Reporter for the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association and the Virginia Bar Foundation.
As a testament to his legal expertise, Mr. Cohn for many years was named among The Best Lawyers in America, as a New York Metro Super Lawyer and as a Virginia Super Lawyer and awarded an AV Rating by Martindale-Hubbell. He was also named several times to Virginia's Legal Elite and elected a fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers in which he chaired for many years its Affordable Housing Committee. For his professional accomplishments and work on behalf of nonprofits, Mr. Cohn received several Service Awards from Richmond Goodwill Industries, Inc., the Trustees' Award from the Science Museum of Virginia, the Ben Franklin Award from the Richmond Alumni Club of the University of Pennsylvania and a Commendation for Scholarship and Teaching from the University of Richmond School of Law. Further, Mr. Cohn has been a member of many professional and social organizations, including the Harvard Business School Club of Shanghai, the Wharton Club of Shanghai, the Harvard Club of New York City, the Virginia Bar Association in which he chaired the Real Estate Committee, the American Bar Association in which he chaired the Governmental Assistance for Real Estate Programs Committee, the Lincoln's Inn Society at the Harvard Law School and Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity.
