Passionate about improving the lives of others in any way he could, Dr. Bell had spent his life in the fields of medicine and education. Before his passing in 2017, he had diligently and expertly given his knowledge to his students, serving as a professor of medicine and pharmacology for the Medical University of South Carolina from 1979 to 2006. As a result of his excellence, Dr. Bell had been considered a distinguished university professor at the institution since 1998 and had also been a professor emeritus.

True to his love of helping others, Dr. Bell had spent over a decade of his career with the Indiana University School of Medicine. He furthered the education of hundreds of students, teaching as a professor from 1971 to 1979 and as an associate professor from 1968 to 1971. He had also worked as an assistant professor of medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, from 1965 to 1968. Dr. Bell's inspirational teaching methods created generations of professionals ready and able to enter the field of medicine and continue his legacy of saving and enriching lives.

Dr. Bell had worked at various branches of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, for a number of years. He had served as an associate in medicine for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute from 1963 to 1965, as well as a staff member for the same institute from 1959 to 1963. Prior to these positions, Dr. Bell had been a clinical associate with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1957 to 1959.

An excellent writer compelled to share his expertise with others, Dr. Bell had contributed to numerous creative works. He had contributed to the Italian Journal of Mineral and Electrolyte Metabolism from 1990 to his death in 2017. He had also been a contributor to Current Drug Targets - Immune, Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders from 2000 to 2006 and to Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders from 2000 to 2005.

Dr. Bell had also served as a member of the editorial board for Calcified Tissue International from 1978 to 1983 and again from 1994 to 2002. He had contributed to the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research from 1989 to 1993 and The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism from 1982 to 1987. A man of intellect and one who has done groundbreaking research, Dr. Bell's contributions to the field of medicine will influence others for years to come.

Prior to the beginning of his career, Dr. Bell studied at Emory University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. He then spent the remainder of his academic career with Duke University, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1955. Following this accomplishment, Dr. Bell worked as an intern at Duke University Medical Center from 1955 to 1956, as well as a resident at the same institution from 1956 to 1957.

Consistently motivated by helping others, Dr. Bell had offered his time and talents to positions beyond his primary occupations, serving as chairman of the National Institutes of Health from 1993 to 1994. He had spent time with the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases under the National Institutes of Health. He had held the positions of member of the Special Grants Review Committee from 1990 to 1995, as well as chairman of the committee from 1985 to 1986. Furthermore, Dr. Bell had been a member of the General Medicine B Study Section of the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases from 1982 to 1986.

In addition to these roles, Dr. Bell had served his country, working with the U.S. Public Health Service of the military from 1957 to 1963. He had been the chairman of the scientific advisory board of the National Osteoporosis Foundation in Washington, DC, from 1985 to 1988 and a trustee of the organization from 1984 to 1988. Dr. Bell has been recognized for his immense hard work, featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

Further recognition for Dr. Bell's diligence and contributions to the education and medical fields had been expressed through numerous awards. He had been awarded the Shirley Hohl Service Award in 1998 and the Frederic C. Bartter Award 1992, both from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. Dr. Bell had been presented with the Career Recognition Award from the Vitamin D Workshop in 1997 and the William S. Middleton VA Award in 1983. Dr. Bell had also been presented with the Thomas A. Roe Foundation Award from the South Carolina Medical Association in 1982. His accomplishments and dedication to his profession had earned him the Veteran Administration Medical Investigator Award in 1979 and again from 1981 to 1987. Nationally recognized, Dr. Bell had won the Career Development Award from the U.S. Public Health Service from 1965 to 1968.

Bettering any group with which had been affiliated, Dr. Bell had held memberships and esteemed positions with multiple organizations. He had been involved with the Association of Osteobiology, serving as president from 2000 to 2002, secretary and treasurer in 1999 and councilor from 1997 to 1998. Dr. Bell also had spent time with the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, serving as president from 1986 to 1987, as well as secretary and treasurer from 1978 to 1985. Dr. Bell had been affiliated with the Endocrine Society and the Association of American Physicians. He had also been a member of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Additionally, Dr. Bell had been involved with the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Loved and revered by many, Dr. Bell lived a life of integrity, inspiring many to strive for excellence. He is survived by his wife, Ledlie Dinsmore Bell, and his children, Douglas Howard Bell, Julianne Rankin Bell and Bayard Gardiner Bell. Dr. Bell will be remembered not only for his commitment to research, but also his ardent dedication to his loved ones.
