Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Cooperman devoted his career to education: as a teacher in N. Plainfield, NJ for 4 years, high school principal in Belvidere, NJ for 4 years, and superintendent in both Montgomery Twp. for 5 years, and Madison Borough, NJ for 8 years. He then served as commissioner of education for the State of New Jersey for 8 years. Dr. Cooperman officially retired from public education in 1990. This approach resulted in over 90% of the boys and girls graduating from high school.
During the same decade, 1990 to 2000, his idea for "break the mold schools," which he presented to then-Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander, resulted in the New American Schools, a nationwide effort of reform. He served as the Secretary/Treasurer and Educational Adviser to the lay Board. From 2001 to 2011 Dr. Cooperman was the President of the Academy for Teaching and Leadership, an organization that provided professional development to teachers and administrators in public and private schools.
The author of the book, "How Schools Really Work: Practical Advice to Parents from an Insider," Dr. Cooperman also wrote "Eddie and Me: A Story of Friendship." He contributed 67 articles to academic journals and was an Op-Ed columnist for the "Star Ledger," New Jersey's largest circulation newspaper, from 1998 to 2003. In 2007 he produced the documentary "Sex Over Sixty." He is currently writing a children's book tentatively titled, "Manduck."
The recipient of The George Washington Kidd Award for Public Service from Lafayette College and a Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Dr. Cooperman also received a Community Service Award from the American Jewish Congress. George H.W. Bush thanked Dr. Cooperman, in a Rose Garden ceremony, for the idea and implementation of the New American Schools. He has been cited in close to 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Cooperman earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Lafayette College in 1956, followed by a Master of Education and Doctor of Education at Rutgers University, in 1964 and 1969 respectively. In 1984 Dr. Cooperman received an honorary doctorate from Drew University. Between 1956 and 1982 Dr. Cooperman served in the United States Navy, retiring with the rank of Commander.
