Ms. D'Onofrio prepared for her career in the medical community by earning a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College in 1954, followed by a Master of Arts degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan in 1955. The co-owner of MED-COMM Associates, where she worked from 1989 until her retirement in 2015, Ms. D'Onofrio initially worked as a reader's advisor at the Detroit Public Library, the Dallas Public Library, and as a cataloger at Willow Run Public School system and St. Thomas Grade and High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. While interested in library science since the beginning of her academic career, she went on to become a medical record analyst at Chelsea Community Hospital and advanced to a variety of field-related positions, including quality assurance analyst for Tucson General Hospital. As president of Meditranscript Service in Tucson, Arizona, Ms. D'Onofrio worked with physicians in the fields of cardiology, ophthalmology, thoracic surgery, and psychiatry.
Having a varied skill set, Ms. D'Onofrio notably co-authored "Psychiatric Words and Phrases" in 1990, inspired by her transcription work for a psychiatrist in Tucson. Alongside her work on updated editions, she has also contributed articles to several professional journals in her field. She was honored with the Distinguished Transcriptionist Award from the American Association for Medical Transcription in 1984, and she maintains a lifetime membership with Pi Lambda Theta due to her lifelong dedication to academic development.
Passionate about community involvement, Ms. D'Onofrio has served the Leukemia Society of America as block leader several times throughout her career. She has also raised funds for the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the American Institute of Cancer Research, and the Infantile Paralysis Association. In addition to her literary and medical accomplishments, Ms. D'Onofrio has been co-owner and associate designer of a custom apparel and jewelry company in Tucson.
