Teaching for more than 50 years, Dr. Mirza is a tenured mathematics-statistics professor at North Park University in Chicago. First hired in 1969, she also chaired the department of mathematics and statistics and the department of education for nine years, was the director of the Institute for International and Cultural Studies for five years and the assistant academic dean for two years. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Mirza taught in the Kalamazoo Public School system for four years.
A longstanding member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago, the Mathematical Association of Anerica and the American Statistical Association, Dr. Mirza has contributed multiple articles to scholarly journals in her area of expertise over the years. She also served as the editor of "The Illinois Mathematics Teacher" during the mid-1990s. Dr. Mirza has received the Excellence in College Teaching of Mathematics Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Fred Flener Award for Engaging Students Beyond the Classroom, and been honored by the Chicago Chapter of the Armenian International Women's Association in 2015. She also has been the director of the ICTM Regional Contest for high school students at North Park for twenty-six years and has written contest questions for elementary and secondary students nationally for over thirty years.
Recently serving as the president of the Chicago Armenian General Benevolent Union from 2008 to 2013 and as chairman of the of the advisory committee on Education in Illinois much earlier in her career, Dr. Mirza holds a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from North Park College, a Master of Arts in Curriculum Development from Western Michigan University and a Doctor of Education from Western Michigan University, followed by additional coursework in statistics at Northeastern University. She holds a certificate in computer studies and is a specialist in elementary curriculum and administration. Dr. Mirza has been cited in more than 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
