Dr. Fox began his career as a social relations tutor at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1958 to 1959. Following this appointment, he worked for the University of Exeter in England as a sociology lecturer from 1959 to 1963. From 1963 to 1967, he served as a lecturer in social anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science in England. After this opportunity, he began his career at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey as an anthropology professor from 1967 to 1984. Since 1984, Dr. Fox has continued his career with Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in the position of university professor of social theory.
In addition to his career, Dr. Fox was also a postdoctoral fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine from 1970 to 1971, and he worked as a research director at the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation from 1972 to 1984. Since 1970, he has served as a consultant for the United States Department of Defense. He has also published several books including "Kinship & Marriage: An Anthropological Perspective" in 1967, "The Search for Society: Quest for a Biosocial Science and Morality" in 1989, and "Shakespeare's Education: Schools, Lawsuits, Theater, and the Tudor Miracle" in 2012. In addition to his books, he is a frequent contributor to professional journals and his work has been published in such journals as the Journal of American Folklore, the British Journal of Sociology and the Annual Review of Anthropology. Dr. Fox's work has also been included in several anthologies.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Fox received his Bachelor of Science in sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science at the University of London in 1957. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology from the University of London in 1965. In 1997, Dr. Fox was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science in anthropology and Irish studies from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland.
Dr. Fox is a life member of the Brontë Society and a founder of the Shakespeare-Oxford Fellowship. He is also a member of the international advisory board at the Social Issues Research Center in Oxford, England and at Galahad Substance Misuse Solutions LTD. in Surrey, England. In 2013, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in the anthropology and evolutionary biology sections. Dr. Fox has previously been selected for inclusion in the 64th edition of Who's Who in America.
