Since 1962, Mr. Karon has been working at Michigan State University, initially as an assistant professor of psychology, followed by a brief term as an associate professor and later as a full professor. Before taking this post, he worked at a clinical psychology practice in Philadelphia for a year and as a research psychologist and United States Public Health Service fellow from 1959 to 1961. In 1959, Mr. Karon was a research psychologist at Philadelphia Psychiatric Hospital, and held the role of a psychologist and director of research at the Akron Psychological Consultant Center in Akron, OH, in the prior year.
Mr. Karon served one year as a senior clinical psychologist at Annandale Reformatory, another year as an intern in direct analysis for John N. Rosen, M.D., in Gardenville, PA, and three years prior as a research fellow of psychometrics at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, NJ. In 1972, he spent time in California as a visiting lecturer at the California School of Professional Psychology in Los Angeles, CA. Five years later, Mr. Karon was a visiting scholar at the Wright Institute in Los Angeles, CA.
Furthermore, Mr. Karon worked as a research consultant at the United States Naval Hospital in 1979. Prior to this, he contributed to the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. From 1964 to 1965, he lectured on psychiatry at Ypsilanti State Hospital. From 1966 to 1975, he acted as a consultant at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Allen Park, MI, in addition to spending time in Ann Arbor, MI, from 1971 to 1972. Mr. Karon is a diplomate in clinical psychology and psychoanalysis from the American Board of Professional Psychology.
Mr. Karon's entrance into this field is owed to his older brother who was a clinical psychologist. He and his brother were the first two people in their family to pursue a college education. Mr. Karon received a bachelor's degree at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. He continued his studies at Princeton University in Princeton, NJ, where he earned a Master of Arts in 1954. Three years later, he pursued a Doctor of Philosophy at this same university where he was recognized as a United States Public Health Service fellow. In addition, Mr. Karon is a graduate of the Social Sciences Research Council Institute of Mathematics for Social Scientists at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, a program from the summer of 1953.
Mr. Karon has authored numerous creative works, including "The Negro Personality: A Rigorous Investigation of the Effects of Culture" in 1958 and the revised edition of "Black Scars" in 1975. Moreover, he co-authored "Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia: The Treatment of Choice" in 1981. He was a contributing author of "Projective Techniques in Personality Assessment" in 1968, "Techniques of Behavior Change" in 1971, "The Schizophrenic Syndrome: An Annual Review" in 1971, and "The Construction of Madness" in 1976. In addition to these, he was involved with the writing of "Assessment with Projective Techniques: A Concise Introduction" in 1981, "Comprehensive Textbook of Psychotherapy" in 1994, and "Dynamic Therapies for Psychiatric Disorders (Axis I)" in 1995. Mr. Karon also served as editor of volumes one and two of "Affects, Imagery, and Consciousness" by Silvan S. Tomkins in 1962 and 1963 and "Book of Collected Papers" in 2018, in addition to contributing over 100 articles to professional journals.
As a distinguished member of the academic community, Mr. Karon takes part in numerous organizations. He was a fellow of the American Psychological Association and was in the psychotherapy, clinical psychology, and psychoanalysis divisions, and was president of the Psychoanalytic Division from 1990 to 1991. He is a member of the Society for Psychotherapy Research, American Statistical Association, and Psychologists Interested in Psychoanalysis Study, for which he was president from 1987 to 1989. Additionally, Mr. Karon was the president of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Council from 1993 to 1995.
Mr. Karon received the Fowler Award for Distinguished Graduate Teaching from the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students in 1990. Likewise, he was recognized as the Distinguished Psychoanalyst by the Society for Psychoanalytic Training in New York in 1988, and as the National Institute of Mental Health Grantee from 1966 to 1971. Mr. Karon has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
