Professor Emeritus in the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), since 2010 Dr. Haavelsrud's competencies lay in democracy, ethics education, educational sociology, and peace education. He was Distinguished Fellow of the South African Research Chair in Development Education at the University of South Africa (2008–2017). His work deals with the critique of the reproductive role of education and the possibilities for transcendence of this reproduction in light of the traditions of educational sociology and peace research. In 1964 –65 he was affiliated with the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) as a graduate student and years later assisted Betty Reardon in the development of the School Program in the World Law Fund in New York City - later named the Institute for World Order (1972). He took part in the founding of the Peace Education Commission of the International Peace Research Association and served as its 2nd Executive Secretary 1975-79. He was the program chairperson of the First World Conference of the World Council for Curriculum and Instruction in 1974 and edited the proceedings from this conference entitled Education for Peace: Reflection and Action. In 1978 he served as the Carl von Ossietzky guest professor of the German Council for Peace and Conflict Research. He was a member of the Commission "Towards a More Humane World Society" of the Ecumenical Association of Academies and Laity Centres in Europe. In 1984-86 he was the chairperson of an expert group in UNESCO to develop a Teacher's Handbook on Disarmament Education (https://doi.org/10.1080/1740020032000178294). He prepared and organized (with Betty Reardon) the panel for launching the Global Campaign on Peace Education of the Hague Appeal for Peace (1999) and has been a member of the Campaign's International Advisory Board. In 2001-2003 he was a member of a committee appointed by the Peace Education Commission of the International Peace Research Association for the foundation of a Journal of Peace Education and has served on the journal's editorial board since 2003. He was part of the group that prepared the UN Study on Disarmament Education submitted and approved by the General Assembly (2002) and a participant for preparing the report to the UN General Assembly on civil society activities in the culture of peace program of the UN Decade on the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Our Children. He has been a consultant to Educating Cities Latin America 2002-2004 and an International Advisor to Global Education Associates in New York. From 2005-2010 he was an international consultant/advisor to the Programme on Education and Democracy in Latin America. He was a member of Committee (2005-2008) of Arigatou International's Interfaith Council on Ethics Education for Children (www.ethicseducationforchildren.org) resulting in the ongoing "Learning to live together" program.

Dr. Haavelsrud also taught at the Institute of Social Sciences (now the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education) at the University of Tromsø (now UiT, The Arctic University of Norway), lectured at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, and Volda Teachers College (now Volda University College). He was a Visiting Scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University, NY (2001, 2004, 2006, 2008), Stanford University's Graduate School of Education, (1998) the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Educational Foundations (1996), the Department of Policy Studies, Institute of Education, University of London (now University College London) (1993), the International Institute for Educational Planning, UNESCO, Paris, France (1983), and the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi (1980). He began his teaching in "framhaldsskulen" in Valdres and later in Gjøvik "folkeskole" (1959-61). Simultaneously he co-founded "Nord-Aurdal friundervisning" and taught the first courses there.
Dr. Haavelsrud holds a Cand. Polit. Degree from the University of Oslo and a PhD earned at the University of Washington in 1970. Dr. Haavelsrud was a newborn when Nazi occupation forces invaded Norway in 1940 forcing the family to take refuge in a mountain cabin. He served as a Sergeant in the BSHS Officers Training School Medical Corps (1961-1962). He is the son of Martin and Marit Ranheim Haavelsrud and he has one son, Hans Ola. Dr. Haavelsrud has been included in several editions of Who's Who in the World for his work.
