For forty years Ms. Reamy Watts has practiced in the fields of family therapy and personal color and design. Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Reamy Watts pursued an education at Cornell University, earning a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Home Economics (Human Ecology) in 1960. She began her career as a Red Cross YMCA Water Safety Instructor and synchronized swimming instructor in Westport, CT (1963-1970) and abroad in Somalia and Lebanon (1970-1975). On returning to the USA, she continued her studies with a master's degree in social work (MSW) in 1979 at the University of Georgia where she held a graduate assistantship. Her career in family therapy and clinical social work spanned the years 1979-1998. She served as Associate Director of Adult Treatment, Coordinator of Family Therapy and Director of Social Services at Brawner Psychiatric Institute in Atlanta, Georgia (1980-1982). Her years as a family therapist were primarily centered at The Atlanta Institute for Family Studies where she acted as Director of Extramural Training. During her career as a family therapist she became an Approved Supervisor for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and was appointed to its Commission on Supervision. Ms. Reamy Watts was an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor for the Department of Psychology at Georgia State University and served as an editor for The Journal of Strategic and Systemic Therapy. She was named a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (DCSW) and given the designation (ACSW) Academy of Certified Social Workers by the National Association for Social Work. Her published writings in professional journals and edited volumes were used in family therapy training programs throughout the U.S. and abroad.
Ms. Reamy Watts' extensive post graduate studies in psychoneuroimmunology included in- depth study with Caroline Myss and Norm Shealy in the science of intuition and energy medicine. Her studies with Deepak Chopra led to her certification as Primordial Sound Meditation Instructor and Creating Health (based on principles of Ayurveda) Instructor.
Michaelin was immersed in extensive studies in personal color and design from 1986 to 1994 with Suzanne Caygill, the originator of the field of Personal Color Analysis. What began as an avocation in time became a professional career. Ms. Reamy Watts graduated from Ms. Caygill's Academy of Color in 1991 when she was certified as a Personal Color Analyst. Through a comprehensive apprenticeship with Ms. Caygill, Michaelin developed expertise in personal color and design extended to interior design and architectural color, and became Ms. Caygill's teaching and color palette assistant and protégé until Ms. Caygill's death in 1994. In 1998 Ms. Reamy Watts ended her family therapy career and shifted her full attention to personal color and design. She succeeded in establishing Ms. Caygill's extensive collection of archives at the Deptartment of Rare Books and Manuscripts at Cornell University, where she continues to fund the digitization of these important works, visited by researchers from around the world. At Ms. Caygill's direction, Ms. Reamy Watts is working on a book about Ms. Caygill's life and work and Michaelin's own amplification and extension of her theory in practice. In 1995 Ms. Reamy Watts founded Natural Color Design, now based at her studio in Carmel, California. She has worked extensively throughout California in personal color and design. Her interior design work was featured at the Napa Valley Designer Showcase in 2000. She did extensive interior design and architectural color for prominent Silicon Valley homes, in Squaw Valley and at the Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel (1996-2009).
Beyond her responsibilities in her chosen fields, Ms. Reamy Watts has been a leader in many endeavors in her community. She became a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor in 1957. In 1971 she established a summer swimming program in Mogadiscio (Mogadishu), Somalia, where she taught children from 14 nationalities. In Beirut, Lebanon, she assisted in teaching synchronized swimming to a team that performed in the Middle East and the U.S. She was a founder of the Atlanta Committee for Children (1983-85) facilitating support for children from war torn Lebanon receiving medical treatment and was the founder of the Atlantans for Middle East Understanding.
In 2009, with her husband, David H. Watts, Michaelin founded Bring Me A Book Franklin, a non-profit focused on igniting the passion to read in young children from birth. She continues serving as president. Her community leadership has expanded to include chairmanship of the Early Learning Task Force, focused on maintaining the presence of Head Start through the establishment of The Children's Learning Center in Apalachicola, Florida. She and her husband have donated a naturalized children's playground in historic Lafayette Park in Apalachicola, where they have restored historic Villa Rosa, the former home of author and illustrator Alexander Key.
Ms. Reamy Watts has four children: Jennifer Cowie King, James Judson Cowie, David Knight Cowie and Laura Stevens Cowie and five step-children: David, Eric and Jeff Watts, Kristi Potthast and Tricia Crist. Michaelin and her husband Dave combine their families and enjoy relationships with their nine children and thirty grandchildren. Ms. Reamy Watts has organized a camp in California for their grandchildren and grand nephews, providing opportunities for the older children to lead activities in their areas of interest and expertise and be mentors to their younger siblings and cousins.
Michaelin maintains an active interest in swimming and hiking. She is an avid tennis player, participating in the USTA National Senior Women's Tennis Championships where she has won the silver and bronze in women's doubles on grass in her age group. She was Captain of the USTA Northern California (75's) Intersectional Team (2014-2016) and has won the gold in the Capital City Senior Games (2016-2018) and the Florida Senior Games (2016) in both women's doubles and mixed doubles. She was a member of the U.S. Team that won the Friendship Cup against an international team in Portschach, Austria in 2016.
Ms. Reamy Watts has received a number of academic and service honors and accolades throughout her lifetime including the National Honor Society (1956), Daughters of the American Revolution Citizenship Award (1956), YMCA Service Award White Plains, N.Y (1958) and Westport, CT (1965), Mortar Board, Raven and Serpent and Omicron Nu at Cornell University (1957-1960) and Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Georgia (1979).
