Additionally, he held multiple positions at Louisiana State University, including director of the Multidisciplinary Pain Center from 1995 to 2017, associate professor of neurology from 1998 to 2008, assistant professor of neurology at the School of Medicine from 1994 to 1998, and resident in neurology at the School of Medicine from 1990 to 1994. He served as chief resident in neurology in 1994. Previously, he served the School of Medicine at Louisiana State University as an associate professor of anatomy in 1986 and assistant professor of anatomy from 1980 to 1986. Dr. Gould began his career as an assistant professor of anatomy in the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati from 1974 to 1980.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Gould pursued an education at Stony Brook University, earning a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1969. He continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in biology and biological sciences at Brown University in 1974. He concluded his studies at Louisiana State University in 1990, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Gould was certified in neurology in 1997, certified in pain management by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 2001 and by the American Board of Pain Medicine in 2002, and is licensed to practice medicine in the State of Louisiana.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Gould has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. From 1970 to 1976, he completed service with the United States Army Reserve. He has contributed to the faculty for the National Initiative on Pain Control and served as chairman of the pain management advisory committee for the Medical Center of Louisiana . He has also held the role of visiting scientist for Vanderbilt University multiple times between 1977 and 1985. Dr. Gould has additionally offered his skills to the scientific advisory boards of Elan Pharmaceuticals, Parke-Davis, Pfizer, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals, among others.
Dr. Gould found success with his written works as well, having authored myriad articles for esteemed publications such as the Journal of the Neurological Sciences, Pain Medicine, the Journal of Pain, Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management, Brain Research, the Journal of Comparative Neurology, Oncotarget and the Essentials of Regional Anesthesia. In 2007, he penned "Understanding Pain – What It Is, Why It Happens, and How It's Managed." In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Gould remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the Southern Pain Society. He serves on the board of directors is currently president-elect for the society. He was also active with the American Pain Society, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American, and the American Association for Cancer Research. . Likewise, Dr. Gould was a member of the American Association of Anatomists, the Society for Neuroscience, the British Brain Research Association, the European Brain and Behavior Society, the International Brain Research Organization, the World Federation of Neuroscientists and Sigma Xi.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Gould has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He has been honored among Who's Who in Frontiers of Science and Technology, Men of Achievement, American Men and Women of Science, the National Registry of Who's Who, and the International Who's Who of Professionals.
