With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Quay retired in 1999, having been a mathematics teacher with the Warren Consolidated Schools since 1970. Prior to obtaining this role, he was a consultant with the Macomb County Intermediate School District from 1969 to 1970. Earlier in his career, he worked as a teacher with Detroit Public Schools Community District from 1960 to 1969. In addition to his work as an educator, Mr. Quay served as a floor supervisor with the Walter P. Chrysler Museum from 1999 to 2008.
Mr. Quay was inspired to pursue a career in education from an early age when his own teacher encouraged him to become an educator. He began his career by serving as a Sunday school teacher as a teenager, and his friends and family continued to support his career path. He first studied at Wayne State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in education in 1960 and a Master of Education in 1963. He subsequently joined the University of Detroit, where he earned a master's degree in teaching mathematics in 1966. Mr. Quay is certified as a mathematics, history, and English teacher by the state of Michigan.
A leading voice in the field, Mr. Quay has been affiliated with numerous organizations in his areas of expertise. He was a life member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Detroit Area Council of Teachers of Mathematics, for which he also served as vice president, treasurer, president, and co-founded Mathematics Field Day and Myriad of Mathematics Merriment. He also served as an activities writer for Science Research Associates, Inc., as an editorial editor for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and as a summer associate with the United States Army Tank Automotive Command, for whom he authored several technical papers. He is a current member of Bethany Baptist Church and previously served as an active member of his community as an usher, assistant treasurer, and finance secretary with the Redeemer Baptist Church, as well as a member of the board of education for Macomb Christian Schools.
Throughout his career, Mr. Quay has been recognized for his contributions, having been named Teacher of the Year by Warren Consolidated Schools in 1984, which he considers to be the highlight of his career. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the Midwest. In his free time, Mr. Quay enjoys reading, gardening, solving puzzles and antique automobiles.
