With more than 50 years of professional experience, Prof. Madix was a professor of chemical engineering since 1977 and a professor of chemistry since 1981 with Stanford University. In addition to his primary roles, he was Charles Lee Powell professor of chemical engineering from 1990 to 2005 and chair of the chemical engineering department from 1983 to 1987. Dr. Madix began his work at Stanford as an assistant professor from 1965 to 1972, and as an associate professor from 1972 to 1977. Since 2005 he has been a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Harvard University where he continues his research today.
Following his fascination with chemistry and mathematics, Dr. Madix began his career as a student at the University of Illinois, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1961. In addition to his academic achievements he lettered three years in varsity baseball and was awarded as the University of Illinois' sole recipient of the Big Ten Honor Medal for outstanding scholarship and athletic prowess in his senior year. He subsequently attended graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a PhD in chemical engineering in 1964. From 1964 to 1965 he was a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Physical Chemistry in Goettingen, Germany. Prof. Madix is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, and the International Precious Metal Institute, and he is a Fellow of both the American Chemical Society and the American Vacuum Society.
Throughout his career, Prof. Madix has been recognized with numerous awards and lectureships for his contributions, including the Alpha Chi Sigma Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Paul Emmett Award from the Catalysis Society of North America, the Humboldt U.S. Senior Scientist Prize, the Henry J. Albert Award from the International Precious Metal Institute and the Irving Langmuir Distinguished Lecturer Award, the Arthur Adamson Award and the Gabor Somorjai Award in Catalysis from the American Chemical Society. He has also given numerous prestigious lectures, including the Peter Debye Lectures at Cornell University and the Mason Lecture at Stanford.
