Dr. Halligan has always wanted to help others, and decided to do so by pursuing a career in counseling. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Hollins College, a Masters of Arts and Certificate of Advanced Studies in counseling and psychology from Fairfield University, a Doctorate of Philosophy in clinical psychology from Fordham University, and a Masters of Arts in comparative religions from St. Louis University of St. Louis. During those student years she received several scholarships, fellowships and academic honors. As part of her training she completed a psychology internship at the VA Medical Center in Northport, NY, a postdoctoral fellowship at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago; and she was also mentored by R. Tomas Agosin, MD.
Dr. Halligan began her counseling career as a consultant for Yale University Medical School and then became a counselor and director of Guidance at Sacred Heart Academy. She spent the majority of her career as a college counselor at Fordham University and at Western Connecticut State University where she also served as director of the counseling center.
In addition to her practical work, Dr. Halligan also ventured into education: She taught at the C.G. Jung in New York City, and served as a visiting associate professor at Fordham University. Then she served as a part of the adjunct faculty at Fordham, and at Iona College, the College of New Rochelle, Mercy College, Fairfield University, Washington University of St. Louis, Northwestern University Medical School and at Western Connecticut State University. She also served as co-chair for the Cape Cod Institute at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Wellfleet, MA and co-hosted several CAFH Foundation seminars for "Psychotherapy and the Spirit" and the Fordham University conference on "Fires of Desire: Libidinal Energies and the Spiritual Quest." Today, in order to remain aware of developments in her field, she maintains affiliation with the American Psychological Association.
In addition to numerous professional book chapters, papers and articles that have been published in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Halligan has four professional books to her credit:
