Dr. Neff notably taught within the university's PhD program, which is the second-oldest in the nation.
Dr. Neff formerly taught as an associate and full professor at Cincinnati College-Conservatory and as an assistant professor at Barnard College in New York City, the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, American University in Washington, D.C., and Bates College in Maine. She was notable a visiting endowed chair at the University of Alabama in 2013 and has served on the advisory board for Musicologica Austriaca Vienna. Since 2009, she has been a member of the review board of Music and Contemporary Culture at the University of Haifa, Israel. She was the first woman to be named Editor-in-Chief of Music Theory Spectrum, the most prestigious American journal in her field.
During her career, Dr. Neff has experienced a number of memorable opportunities. Notably, she spoke at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Sichuan Province, China, one of the leading music institutions in China and one of the largest conservatories in the world, at China Conservatory and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She was also responsible for discovering two unknown works of Arnold Schoenberg, who was an esteemed Austrian-American composer, music theorist, teacher, writer and painter. She is serving as the General Editor with Sabine Feisst of "Schoenberg in Words," a nine-volume set published through Oxford University Press, beginning in 2009. She also was editor of the first publication on Schoenberg's theories of the "musical idea." Dr. Neff authored and edited several other works as well, including The Rite of Spring at 100 in 2017; this text was also named a "notable book in music" in 2017 by Alex Ross of The New Yorker magazine. A second edition of The Musical Idea was published in 2006, leading to a Chinese translation with Central Conservatory of Music Press in 2015. She is also a contributor to The New Grove Dictionary of Music.

Dr. Neff has received several grants during her tenure, too, from such organizations as the China Conservatory, the Society for Music Theory and the Korea Foundation. She has been showcased in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
Dr. Neff is a delegate for the American Council of Learned Societies. She is also a member, former secretary and board director of the Society of Music Theory, and a member, former theory representative and board director of the College Music Society.
Dr. Neff received an undergraduate degree at Barnard College, a master's degree at the prestigious Yale University, followed by an MFA and PhD at Princeton University.
