He completed his residency in the department of dental and maxillofacial surgery at the Medical University of Innsbruck.
Dr. Emshoff has contributed to the development of rehabilitation methods of treating chronic facial pain, pioneering minimal-invasive temporomandibular joint surgery that is exceptionally effective. In addition, he has established non-invasive modalities useful in treating certain types of chronic temporomandibular disorder pain. Dr. Emshoff has also introduced the development of a conceptual model for the identification of clinically relevant effects in the field of chronic temporomandibular pain.
Dr. Emshoff is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Clinical Trials, Philosophy of Science Association, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, and the International Association for the Study of Pain.
Dr. Emshoff was awarded the Endodontics University Award by the Journal of Endodontics in 2005. He has published numerous research papers and textbook chapters on orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders. His work is widely cited in literature and can be found in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Orofacial Pain, Journal of the American Dental Association and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
