Subsequent to these appointments, he served as a physician within the department of family practice and lieutenant commander with the Medical Corps of the United States Navy from 1974 to 1976. Transitioning to private practice in Okemos, MI, in 1976, Dr. Gillespie remained in that role for 25 years until his well-deserved retirement in 2001.
Alongside his career endeavors, Dr. Gillespie held the position of chair of continuing education within the department of family practice at the Edward W. Sparrow Hospital from 1976 to 1991 and assistant clinical professor within the department of family practice at the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University from 1981 to 2001. Since retirement, he has remained involved with his field through his affiliation with the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Gillespie also remains associated with the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians, where he was treasurer of the Capitol chapter from 1982 to 1992.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Gillespie received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan in 1966. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan in 1971 and became a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice in 1974; he was re-certified by examination five times from 1980 to 2004. As a testament to his professional success and unwavering dedication to the field, Dr. Gillespie has also been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
