Ms. Sanchez began her career as a Spanish and English teacher at the American School Foundation of Chiapas A.C. in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico, from 1977 to 1978. Following this appointment, she held the role of English teacher at the Autonomous University of Chiapas in Tuxtla Gutierrez from 1978 to 1988. From 1987 to 1991, she also served as a language arts and reading teacher at the Bicultural Institute in Tuxtla Gutierrez. Ms. Sanchez has been a member of the task force for high school English for Speakers of Other Languages curriculum writing for the El Paso Independent School District in El Paso, TX, since 1993.
Ms. Sanchez received a Bachelor of Arts in Inter-American and Border Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1981. Following this achievement, she earned her Master in Arts in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1986. Ms. Sanchez is certified as a teacher in English for Speakers of Other Languages, language arts 8-12, Spanish and reading by the state of Texas.
In addition to her career, Ms. Sanchez was sub-director of the Bicultural Institute from 1990 to 1991. During this time, she was also the official interpreter for the press for Pope John Paul II's visit to Chiapas, Mexico, in 1990. Since 1993, she has been a trainer of teachers, and from 2002 to 2006, she was a liaison for the bilingual education network in the EPISD. She was active as an education, research and dissemination trainer of teachers for the American Federation of Teachers from 2005 to 2008. Additionally, Ms. Sanchez has been a presenter at numerous conferences.
Since 2005, Ms. Sanchez has been a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Project Bravo and Rebuilding Together. She has also held the position of ESOL department chair at Burges High School from 2005 to 2016, and from 2006 to 2007, she was a committee member of the campus improvement team for Burges High School. She has also been a group member of "Just for Kicks," a dance group that dances for the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department and at senior centers. From 2015 to 2018, Ms. Sanchez was an executive board member of "Showtime! El Paso," a convert series celebrating 85 years in El Paso.
Ms. Sanchez is a member of the Texas Teachers English to Speakers of Other Languages Association and Phi Kappa Phi. She is also a member of the American Teachers Federation and was area coordinator from 1993 to 1999 and has been the building representative since 2000. She was recipient of the Texas Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages Award for Region I of Texas in the 2002-2003 school year. She was also named to the National Honor Roll of Outstanding American Teachers in the 2005-2006 school year. Ms. Sanchez has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in American Education.
