A respected leader in his community, Mr. Brewer has been the founder and president of Andy B. Golf since 2011. In this position, he helps run annual charity golf events, the proceeds of which help students with financial needs gain scholarships for college. The H.O.P.E. Classic Golf Tournament also includes prizes for winners and for those who complete certain feats, such as a hole-in-one and challenges on par 3 holes.
Mr. Brewer has been involved in athletics since an early age, having played football, baseball and basketball. As a teenager, he and his friends worked as golf caddies and developed an interest in the game, constructing their own course and playing at school. After receiving a diploma from Carver High School where he was Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook, he also earned an electronics and television technician certificate from The Delehanty Institute, School of Radio, Electronics & Television in New York in 1968. Mr. Brewer then served in the United States Army from 1958-1960. Over the ensuing years, he worked in the retail, publishing and transportation industries, most notably as a bus operator for the New York City Transit Authority for 21 years until his retirement in 1999.
Born in LaGrange, Georgia, Mr. Brewer was married to Betty with whom he had two daughters: Cheryl Denise and Dawn Falita, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was as well married to Ernestine for 13 years. He is a Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame inductee and the Las Vegas Birdies Club's founder and first club champion, who serves as a correspondent/travel writer for the African American Golfer's Digest. He has penned several articles including ones on Michael Jordan's Celebrity Golf Invitational and the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe South.
Mr. Brewer enjoys playing golf competitively, striving to be the best at what he does. However, he is most proud of the work he has done to help others, particularly children. To this end, he has organized, chaired and sponsored numerous events including the Andy B. Golf Scholarship Foundation in 2013, the NAACP's Fourth Annual H.O.P.E. Scholarship Golf Classic in 2010, the Annual H.O.P.E. Scholarship Golf Classic in 2008, and the Second Annual H.O.P.E. Scholarship Golf Classic in 2007. Back in New York, he was an organizer for the New York City Transit Authority's 10th Annual Golf Outing benefitting Friends of Hale House, a fundraiser for the NAACP, chair of the NAACP's Scholarship Committee, founder of the Tri-State Civil Service League's Basketball League, and president and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tri-State Civil Service League in Brooklyn. He also organized a golf tournament fundraiser for Harrison House as well as several events for 100 Academy Foundation, which is a charter school sponsored by 100 Black Men of Las Vegas, a men's civic organization that strives to educate and empower African-American children and teens, of which he is a member.
He has been involved with various sporting organizations over the years including as president (2005) vice president (2003) and member (2003-2017) of the Valley View Golf Club in Las Vegas, president of the Silver Nugget Bowling Club, chairman of the disciplinary committee of the Open Range Tournament Club's (ORTC), president of Bowling Club, junior staffer of The Surfside Golf Club (2000), president, board member and chairman of the Club House (1964-1998), founder and president of the Las Vegas Birdies Club, and golf chairman and member of the Ward 5 Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas (2003). He also held various positions with the New York Shotmaker Golf Club (1964-1998). Mr. Brewer is a former member of the Sand Hill Senior Association, committee chair and advisor to Harrison House in Las Vegas, and president of the Las Vegas chapter of the NAACP.
