Sociologist, ethnographer, writer Peter I. Rose was born in Rochester, New York, in 1933, and grew up in upstate New York. He received an A.B from Syracuse University in 1954 and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1959. He is Sophia Smith Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Anthropology and Senior Fellow of the Kahn Liberal Arts Institute at Smith College where, for more than thirty years, he was director of the American Studies Diploma Program for foreign graduate students. He is also a member of the Graduate Faculty of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Smith College has been his academic base since 1960, but he has spent considerable time off-campus in the U.S. and abroad. He taught at Goucher College in Baltimore in 1958-1960 and, over the years, served as a visiting professor at Clark University, the University of Colorado, Amherst College, Wesleyan University, UCLA, Yale and Harvard, and as a visiting fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, the Hoover Institution and at the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences at Stanford.
A frequent lecturer at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands from which he received the University Medal in 1994, he has also been a Fulbright Professor at the University of Leicester in England, Flinders University in Australia, and at the Kyoto Summer Seminar in Japan, and, since retiring, has served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist and visiting professor at the University of Vienna (2003) and at University College Roosevelt of Utrecht University in The Netherlands (2008). In the spring of 2019 he will serve as Roosevelt Visiting Professor at the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies in Middelburg, The Netherlands.
He has been a Martin Foundation Fellow at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, visiting scholar at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences based in Beijing, resident scholar at the Rockefeller Foundation's Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, Italy, Rhodes Trust Visiting Professor at the Refugee Studies Centre and visiting fellow of St. Catherine's College, both at Oxford University, fellow in anthropology and in history at the Ligurian Center for Arts and Humanities in Bogliasco, Italy, Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Graduate School of American Studies at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, and short-term guest professor at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, Gothenburg University in Sweden, and the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. He has lectured at many other universities and in cities throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and in various parts of Africa.
Best known for his book They and We: Racial and Ethnic Relations in the U.S. and Beyond (Random House, 1964; Paradigm/Routledge Publishers, 7th – and 50th anniversary – ed., 2014), he is also the author of The Subject is Race (Oxford University Press, 1967), Strangers in Their Midst (Richwood Press, 1977), Mainstream and Margins (Transaction Books, 1983), Tempest-Tost (Oxford University Press, 1997), Guest Appearances and Other Travels in Time and Space (Swallow Press, 2003), With Few Reservations (iUniverse, 2010), and a memoir, Postmonitions of a Peripatetic Professor (Levellers Press, 2013). He has long been active in academic organizations. President of the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) in the early 1990s, he was also the first president of the Massachusetts Sociological Society in the 1960s. He served as vice president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP), as a member of the Council of the American Sociological Association, and was on the editorial boards of Races and Nations, The Journal of Refugee Studies, and New Community. From 1965-1980 he was Consulting Editor in Sociology at Random House/Knopf, during which time he also edited a Random House series of "Ethnic Groups in Comparative Perspective," and he was a principal editorial consultant to Time-Life Books for its 14 volume series, Human Behavior. He has been consultant and advisor to a number of other publishers as well as to private and governmental agencies in the U.S. and abroad on issues of desegregation, refugee policy, international scholarly exchanges, and higher education. Founder of its academic program, for twenty years he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine.
He was first chair of the International Advisory Board of University College Utrecht, an international residential liberal arts honors college of Utrecht University modeled on Smith College, and remains involved with that institution and with its sister institution, University College Roosevelt, located in Middelburg, The Netherlands. He is a fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar in Austria, a member of its American Studies Advisory Board, and a core faculty member in the Seminar's affiliated Global Citizenship Alliance Program. A free-lance writer, prize-winning travel journalist and photographer, and a frequent contributor to a variety of newspapers and both print and web-based magazines, including Travelworld International, Global Writes, and SoGoNow.com, which he edited from 2006-2009, he is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the North American Travel Journalists Association, and several other professional writers associations.
