After 45 years of medical practice as a Board-Certified (ABM) specialist in internal medicine, Board-Certified in Disaster Medicine and a part-time hospitalist, Dr. Simmons retired December 31, 2015. Earlier in his career, he completed his internship and residency at Los Angeles County Hospital-University of Southern California. He practiced for three years at Astoria Clinic in Astoria, OR where he worked alongside all of the physicians involved in the Supreme Court case: Patrick versus Astoria Clinic, which ultimately changed peer review standards. He practiced as a solo physician, in a two-man office and in a small group in Eugene, OR, until he joined PeaceHealth, a large, multi-specialty group, from 1996 to 2016. During those years Dr. Simmons also held two different appointments as Chairman of the Internal Medicine Department for the PeaceHealth Medical Group.
Dr. Simmons served on the Board of Trustees for eight years as well as President-elect and President of Lane County Medical Society. He helped found the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program in Eugene and has taught nearly 2000 volunteers for CERT, regionally and locally, since 2004. He is also trained to be a Trainer of CERT Trainers and an Emergency Program Manager.
Over the years, he has also honed his medical knowledge through various positions with the American Academy of Disaster Medicine, the Medical Reserve Corps Council, Citizen Corps, Map Your Neighborhood and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He is a licensed HAM operator. He has lectured nationally on disaster preparedness and has taught classes for NASA, IAEM and Citizen Corps. He has been a co-host for talk radio shows at KABC (LA) 1972, KPNW (Eugene) ca 1994 and KUGN (Eugene) ca 2008-2013.
Dr. Simmons is also a Fellow with the Discovery Institute in Seattle (2008-present) and has lectured nationally at universities, churches, synagogues and town halls as well as overseas in Spain and Israel (at Hatorah) on Intelligent Design (I.D.). He has two international blogs, one on Evolution News and the other on Shabbat.com as well as several podcasts on I.D., which are also at Evolution News. He has published several articles in journals and nine Op-Eds in the Register Guard relevant to disaster preparedness.
A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Simmons holds a Bachelor of Science in biology and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois. He has authored a number of books both fiction and nonfiction, including "The Z Papers," "The Adam Experiment," "Pandemic," "MURDOCK," "The Glue Factory" (a humorous satire about a robot doctor), "To Glue or Not to Glue," (sequel humorous satire), "What Darwin Didn't Know," "Billions of Missing Links" and "Common Sense and Disaster Preparedness." Due to his outstanding accomplishments, Dr. Simmons has been recognized many times, earning features in Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
