Dr. Joseph Klimek currently holds multiple positions with Hartford Hospital

He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University, graduating cum laude in 1968, also earning a Doctor of Medicine from Pennsylvania State University in 1972. He has received diplomas from the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Klimek currently holds multiple positions with Hartford Hospital, including vice president of physician relations since 2010, vice president of medical affairs since 2006, and associate chairman of the department of medicine since 1995.
In addition to these roles, Dr. Klimek has served as associate chairman of the department of medicine for the School of Medicine at the University of Connecticut since 1995. He has also been a professor for the University of Connecticut since 1990. Previously, Dr. Klimek held the positions of associate professor from 1984 to 1990 and assistant professor of medicine from 1977 to 1984, both for the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Klimek has spent much of his career with Hartford Hospital. He was the director of the department of medicine from 1990 to 2005, first serving as associate director from 1987 to 1990. He was also the chairman of the AIDS task force from 1985 to 1990, director of subspecialty medicine from 1985 to 1987 and chief of epidemiology from 1976 to 1987. Dr. Klimek also held the positions of fellow in infectious disease from 1972 to 1976, as well as intern and resident in internal medicine while earning his medical degree.
Sharing his knowledge with others, Dr. Klimek has contributed to multiple works in the field of medicine. He was the senior associate editor of the American Journal of Infection Control from 1980 to 1995 and a medical editor of Asepsis, The Infection Control Forum. Dr. Klimek has also been a member of numerous editorial boards in the field of medicine and has contributed articles to medical journals.
Dr. Klimek's accomplishments are many, including, but not limited to, integrating an internal medicine residency of Hartford Hospital with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He has developed a hospital community linkage network for AIDS care in Greater Hartford, developed a hospital-wide program in integrative medicine and initiated formal hospitalist program for care of inpatients. Furthermore, Dr. Klimek facilitated hospital-wide programs in palliative medicine, initiated a formal approach to patient safety and quality and initiated a 24 hour transfer center for Hartford Hospital.
Inspired by a doctor from his childhood who had treated him every day when he had had a tonsillectomy, Mr. Klimek knew he wanted to become a doctor and practice the same level of care he had been shown. He considers a career highlight to be in 1988, when he had a patient with HIV. Suffering from a drug addiction, the patient needed surgery to treat an infected heart valve, yet no one but the surgeon wanted to go into the operating room to assist with the procedure. Mr. Klimek decided to enter the room and help, inspiring others to aid as well.
Bettering any group with which he is affiliated, Dr. Klimek holds membership with several organizations. He is a fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Disease Society of America. He has also held membership with the American Public Health Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Profiles in Infection Control and the American Society of Microbiology. Dr. Klimek has also been a member of the American Federation of Clinical Research, the Society of Hospital Epidemiologists of America, the American Venereal Disease Association and the American Medical Writers Association.
Dr. Klimek has been recognized for his contributions and accomplishments. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1978, as well as the American Red Cross Award in 1986. Due to his eminence, Dr. Klimek has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who In Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
