Prof. Szymon Suckewer worked as a professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University from 1987 to 2016.
PRINCETON, NJ, October 18, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Prof. Szymon Suckewer with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Suckewer celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Now retired from teaching as of July 1, 2016, but continues his research as Senior Scholar, Dr. Suckewer worked as a professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University from 1987 to 2016. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, he served as a researcher and professor at the Institute of Nuclear Research at Warsaw University in Warsaw, Poland, where he was born. He then worked at the Plasma Physics Laboratory at Princeton University from 1975 to 1987, advancing from research staff to principal research physicist in charge of the x-ray laser project in 1980.
Dr. Suckewer and his group conceived and developed the first recombination soft x-ray laser in a magnetically confined plasma column. Several years later, he and his group developed soft x-ray laser in transition to ground states of ions. They also invented a new type of x-ray laser microscope, the Composite Optical/X-Ray Microscope, also known as COXRALM, which provides very high resolution images of biological specimens and did not require destructive preparation of tissue.
Dr. Suckewer earned a Master of Science in physics at Moscow University in 1962, studying under Academician Lev Artsimovich, head of the Soviet Fusion Power Program. He went on to attend Warsaw University, where he obtained his PhD in 1966 and a Doctor of Science in 1971, both with a focus in physics. Always interested in engineering and rocket science, he wanted a practical career, so other people can benefit from his work. After graduating, he received a fellowship from the Optical Society of America, contributed numerous articles to science journals and held more than twenty patents in his field.
In 1993, Dr. Suckewer became the co-director of the Program in Plasma Science and Technology at Princeton University, a post he shared with Dr. Samuel Cohen. The program is part of the university's engineering school and sponsored by the lab. In recent years, he has focused on bioengineering and medical applications of lasers. He was awarded the W.E. Lamb Medal in 2005 and the Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Science in 2007, and is listed in the 62nd edition of Who's Who in America and several editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the East.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Prof. Szymon Suckewer has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
