IRVINE, CA, October 19, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present William A. Sirignano, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Sirignano celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Sirignano is a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of California, Irvine, and former dean of the School of Engineering. A faculty member since 1985, he currently leads the combustion, fluid dynamics and propulsion group. Dr. Sirignano's current research activities include the problems of the vaporization and burning of liquid fuels in very small volumes, as well as turbulence-droplet interactions, distortion and breakup of thin liquid streams, flames spread across liquid fuel pools and a study of combustion in high speed flows. He is also interested in combustion theory and computational methods, fluid dynamics, multiphase flows and propulsion and power.
Teaching for more than 50 years, Dr. Sirignano has been fortunate to have enjoyed a career that allows him to continuously interact with young people. Entering academia after first spending three years as a member of the research staff in the aerospace and mechanical sciences department at the Guggenheim Laboratories with Princeton University, he was hired as an assistant professor in 1967. He then became an associate professor and full professor by 1973, followed by several years as department director of graduate studies beginning in1974. Dr. Sirignano then spent another five-and-one-half years as the George Tallman Ladd professor and as head of the mechanical engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University beginning in 1979.
In 1984, Dr. Sirignano was recruited as Dean of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). During his ten years as dean, the UCI School of Engineering enjoyed extraordinary growth in faculty size, student enrollments, laboratory facilities, and reputation. More recently, he has been a Henry Samueli endowed chair at UCI. He has served on several advisory committees for the National Research Council and as a private consultant for various industrial and government operations since 1966. He has served as an advisory committee member for NASA, a touring lecturer for NATO, a treasurer of the international Combustion Institute, and chairman of its eastern section. In addition to authoring many articles in his field for various peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Sirignano was a special issues editor for Combustion Science and Technology and an associate technology editor of the Journal of Heat Transfer.
Active with several professional organizations, Dr. Sirignano is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a former president and vice president of the Institute of Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems. He is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the American Physical Society, and the Combustion Institute.
Dr. Sirignano received multiple awards for his work, including a 2009 Wyld Propulsion Award, 2006 Sustained Service Award and 2004 Energy Systems Award. He has been cited in more than 65 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
As a high school student, Dr. Sirignano was very interested in mathematics, which led to his interest in engineering. In college, he began studying electrical engineering, only to develop an interest in flight and airplanes. Earning a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1959, he then obtained a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at Princeton University in 1962 and 1964, respectively.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, William A. Sirignano, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
