Distinguished Professor of Violin Emeritus at the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York where he taught from 1981 to 2016. Mr. Lindsey is a very talented musician who has been playing the violin since elementary school. Discovering his father's violin in the attic when he was just a child, he still remembers asking what it was and if he could give it a try. Although there were no string lessons at the elementary school at the time, his father, who played but wasn't very good, found a trumpet player who taught band and who had some string experience teach to his son. That was the beginning of Mr. Lindsey's love of music.
Mr. Lindsey was a chamber music coach for the Adult Chamber Music Conference in Interlochen, MI, between 1983 and 2012 and taught violin at the National Music Camp, also in Interlochen, from 1983 to 1987. He also taught as an associate professor of violin at the University of Kentucky, was an assistant professor of violin at Baylor University, taught strings at Dallas Independent School District and was a violin teacher and director of strings at the Governor's School of North Carolina for 12 summers. Mr. Lindsey taught for 45 years in all and enjoyed every minute of it. Honoring his dedication to the field, he was included in the seventh edition of Who's Who in American Education.
Mr. Lindsey has been a member of the chamber music faculty with the Ameropa Festival in Prague since 2001 and the Orchestra of Northern New York in Potsdam since 1988, and has been a first violinist with the Aurora String Quintet since 1987. A former Concertmaster of the Warren Chamber Orchestra in Ohio, former concertmaster of the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, former violinist with the Quartetto da Camera in Lexington, KY, and the Ruggieri Chamber Soloists in Vermont, Mr. Lindsey was also a longtime member of the chamber music faculty of the Ithaca Chamber Music Institute at Ithaca College for 20 years between 1987 and 2007 and The Canna International Chamber Music Festival in Italy in 2000.
Active in his local community, Mr. Lindsey served as strings chairman for the Kentucky Music Teachers Association and vice president of the Chamber Music Society of Central Kentucky in Lexington. He is a longstanding member of the American String Teachers Association and the Triple Nine Society.
Enjoying many profound moments in his career, Mr. Lindsey particularly enjoyed playing in Prague. In Prague, he played a Mozart flute quartet on a concert in a room where Mozart composed an opera, Don Giovanni. Notably, in 1973, he was honored with a Mozart Award by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Music Club. Mr. Lindsey has also played as part of the International Chamber Music Festival and Tour in Bulgaria, the Stage de Musique in Mareillat in Combraille, France, the Columbian National Youth Orchestra in Santa Marta, Columbia, and the Vianden Music Festival at Vianden Castle in Luxembourg.
Originally Mr. Lindsey was an engineering major for two years. Skipping a grade in elementary school, he entered college at the age of 16. Unsure whether engineering was the path he wanted to take, he later transferred to his home university in Illinois. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music at the University of Illinois in 1970 and 1972, respectively. Married to Amornrat P. Lindsey, they have a daughter, Isabel. Mr. Lindsey has three other children from a previous marriage. Enjoying his retirement, he loves spending his free time being active. He plays racquetball, squash and softball. He also enjoys stamp collecting.
