In 1998, Dr. Suter became a principal electronics engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, NY. In the year leading up to this role, he was the professor of electrical engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Greene County, OH. Previously, he contributed to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as an associate professor of electrical engineering from 1995 to 1997, an associate professor of computer science from 1991 to 1995 and an assistant professor of computer science from 1989 to 1991.
At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Suter was an instructor of computer science from 1985 to 1988 and an assistant professor from 1988 to 1989. Prior to this appointment, he was a research assistant at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL from 1980 to 1985 and a senior designer engineer at Litton Industries in Woodland Hills, CA from 1977 to 1980. His first professional role was as a design engineer of Honeywell Inc. in Saint Petersburg, FL from 1972 to 1977.
Aside from these primary endeavors, Dr. Suter also served as director at the Air Force Research Laboratory Center of Excellence for Integrated Transmission and Exploitation from 2001 to 2007. He also excelled as a visiting professor of computer science at Harvard University from 2003 to 2004 and 2009 to 2010. Dr. Suter would hold that same post at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2009 to 2010.
Dr. Suter began his academic studies at the University of South Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1972. He continued his studies with a Master of Science in electrical engineering, which he obtained that same year. Dr. Suter concluded his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science in 1988.
Now, Dr. Suter is an accomplished professional as well as an author. He has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and authored "Multirate and Wavelet Signal Processing," which was published by Academic Press in 1998. He considers the moment at which he saw his book in print to be a highlight of his career.
Dr. Suter maintains his involvement in the field by maintaining memberships in such prestigious organizations as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, for which he was an associate editor of Transactions on Signal Processing from 1994 to 1996. The IEEE presented him with the Regional Award in 1999. He also holds membership in Knights of Columbus, Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi.
For all of his achievements, Dr. Suter has received the General Ronald W. Yates Award from the Air Force Materiel Command in 2000 and the Arthur S. Flemming Award from the United States Government in 2001. Additionally, he received a doctoral fellowship from the University of South Florida from 1984 to 1985 and a research lab fellow of the United States Air Force in 2005. This achievement stands out in his mind, as well as his Henry Diamond Award that he received from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in 2016.
