Werner Maas Celebrates 70 Years of Practiced Excellence in Microbiology

Dr. Maas is the author of "Laying the Foundation for Molecular Biology"

Dr. Werner Maas intends to continue parlaying his expertise to the next generation of microbiologists through his role as professor emeritus.

HASTINGS ON HUDSON, NY, October 22, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Werner Maas has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Over the course of 70 impressive years, Dr. Maas has excelled in the new field of molecular genetics. After earning an AB in genetics and biochemistry from Harvard University in 1943, he started graduate work at Columbia University, graduating in 1948 with a PhD. Dr. Maas then served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service's Tuberculosis Research Laboratory at Cornell University from 1948 to 1954. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship through the California Institute of Technology, and six years later, transferred to New York University School of Medicine, where he taught pharmacology and microbiology until 1981, when he was given Emeritus status.

Since his student days in 1941 he has been involved in the development of the new science of molecular genetics. His main contributions have been in the discovery of regulatory genes that are essential for the proper functioning of all genes in the maintenance of living cells. In 1955 he discovered that the formation of the amino acid arginine was feedback-regulated by arginine in combination with the product of a regulatory gene. This single gene product controls the formation of the eight enzymes of arginine biosynthesis. The main part of his book, "Laying the Foundation for Molecular Biology" published by X Libris, deals with the analysis of the molecular mechanism of this regulation. Dr. Maas is also the author of "The Spiral of My Life," an autobiography that documents his life from his childhood in Germany, the groundbreaking research he has conducted throughout his career, and everything in between.

In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he affiliates himself with the American Society of Microbiology, the Genetics Society of America and the American Society of Biological Chemists. Looking toward the future, Dr. Maas intends to continue parlaying his expertise to the next generation of microbiologists through his role as professor emeritus.
