Louis Philippe Goldman Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Mr. Goldman has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of higher education

NEWTOWN, PA, October 22, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Louis Philippe Goldman with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Goldman celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A retired educator, Mr. Goldman has been a professor emeritus at Wichita State University in Kansas since 1997. Having taught Foundations of Education on campus for 35 years, he was also a leader in the desegregation of Wichita schools and was active in many liberal, pro-peace causes, especially the nuclear freeze movement during the 1980s. Prior to joining Wichita State University, he was a philosophy lecturer at Brooklyn College between 1957 and 1959.

While in high school, Mr. Goldman took a creative writing course and began writing poetry. In fact, one of his poems was published in the National Anthology of College Poetry, just before entering college. Considering becoming an English or philosophy major thereafter, he was accepted to the honors program at the University of Michigan and decided to pursue philosophy after acing the entrance exam. Earning a bachelor's degree in 1950, Mr. Goldman then pursued a master's degree in philosophy at Columbia University, followed by postgraduate work in philosophy and the philosophy of education at Teachers College, Columbia University in 1962, becoming the teaching assistant to Professor James McClennen. During his years at Columbia University, he was recognized by Irwin Edman, who was head of the department and Chair of the Pulitzer Prize Committee, by being named his prodigy.

The author of "The Rise and Fall of the Gimmee Gimmee Birds," a fable that was originally penned in 1985 and later published in 2015, Mr. Goldman not only addresses economics, politics, psychology and theology, he also tells the story of how we, as a nation, are destroying the environment, are in debt and consuming much more than we can afford. Amassing too much "stuff," Mr. Goldman explains that we must stop being "gimmee birds." He has also contributed more than 50 articles to professional journals such as Educational Theory and Educational Leadership and continues to write op-eds and poetry. Notably, due to his involvement in the peace movement in the 1980s, he was also recognized for writing an article critical of the "mutually assured destruction policy." Published in the "Bulletin of Atomic Scientists," it became an immediate sensation and news networks began contacting him. Interviewed on the radio by Charles Osgood, he was also picked up by the Associated Press and was featured in newspapers all over the country, as well as overseas, due to his proposal for peace.

In addition to his academic achievements, Mr. Goldman was very active in the arts in Wichita, Kansas. He became president of the Dance Foundation of Kansas and during his tenure hosted the Joffrey Ballet Company for a residency. He and Arthur Lief, who was the son-in-law of the great impresario Saul Hurok, conceived of establishing a Wichita summer music theater and brought together the Mayor of Wichita, A. Price Woodard, Music Dean at WSU Walter Meyer, and industrialist Harry Litwin, who was one of the founders of Koch Industries. (Mary Koch, the mother of the Koch brothers, was a very close friend of Mr. Goldman.) Most importantly, Louis Goldman and his wife established Gallery G, which was the preeminent art gallery in Kansas, handling top American and international artists. They also began to publish original serigraphs and lithographs which included a depiction of the Tokyo Raid by General Jimmy Doolittle, whom they befriended. The Gallery and the Goldman family personally befriended young artist Craig McPherson and mentored him. Craig has become a major printmaker and painter with the Forum Gallery and executed monumental murals for the American Express Company in the World Trade Center. Mr. Goldman was also trying to develop a shopping center near Wichita State University and was approved by Pablo Picasso for one of his monumental sculptures with his engineer Carl Nesjar, who visited the Goldmans.

Early in his career, Mr. Goldman was active on the board of directors and as the co-founder of the Wichita chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. He also served as a coordinator of the school desegregation committee for Low Economic Areas Problems in Wichita. He served as a Senior Planner for the Wichita Model Cities Program. An elected fellow and former president of the Missouri Valley chapter of the Philosophy of Education Society, Mr. Goldman is also a longtime member and former president of the American Association of University Professors and the Society of Philosophers and Historians in Education, founder of the Wichita chapter of the Educators for Social Responsibility, and member of several other professional organizations.

He was married to his first wife Sondra Gresen (a ballet dancer at Ballet Theatre) (1961 to 1981) and fathered two children, Eric Dewey (1963-2000) and Lisa Beth (b. 1962). He remarried Martha Sue Schmacht (d. 2013) in 1987. After her death he miraculously reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Millie Auerbach, who has inspired him to write the best works of his life, a suite of poems he calls "The Auerbach Variations". He enjoyed staying active by playing tennis and working in his garden and loves attending various fine art events. He has been showcased in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in American Art.

Many of Mr. Goldman's friends and relatives were (are) noteworthy. His father's cousin, Valentina Brodsky, was Marc Chagall's second wife. His father's cousin, Martin Patricof, is the father of venture capitalist Alan Patricof who owns New York Magazine.
