A Pulitzer Prize winning editor and reporter, Ms. House retired in the spring of 2006 as the publisher of the Wall Street Journal and the senior vice president of its parent company, Dow Jones and Co. During her 32-year career with the WSJ, she covered regulatory agencies, energy, agriculture, and international affairs before serving as foreign editor. Between 1989 and 2002, she served as vice president and then president international of Dow Jones, responsible for the WSJ's print editions in Asia and Europe as well as for magazine and television ventures overseas. As publisher with Dow Jones, Ms. House was the architect of the WSJ's Weekend Edition. She formerly spent a year as an education reporter for the Dallas Morning News from 1970 to 1971, followed by another three years at the paper's Washington bureau between 1971 and 1974.
Throughout her career, Ms. House made multiple appearances on television, including with the Public Broadcasting Service, FOX, CNN and CNBC, as well as on "Washington Week," "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation." She has traveled extensively interviewing numerous world leaders, including the late King Hussein, Yasser Arafat, Margaret Thatcher and Richard Nixon as well as George H.W. Bush and Vladimir Putin, among many others. Her most exciting interview, however, was with Saddam Hussein before he invaded Kuwait. She is also very pleased with her 1989 WSJ series, "Where's the World Going." Since retirement, Ms. House wrote a series of articles in February 2007 for the WSJ following a month-long tour of Saudi Arabia and she frequently writes for the journal's editorial pages. She is author of a book entitled "On Saudi Arabia: Its People, Past, Religion, Fault Lines and Future," public shed by Knopf in 2012.
Ms. House has served on the advisory board for her alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin. She also is chairman of the board of trustees of the Rand Corp. and is a former trustee of the Council on Foreign Relations and of Boston University. She is a fellow of the National Academy of Arts & Science.
Awarded with a Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting in 1984 for her coverage of the Middle East while a reporter with the WSJ, Ms. House was also the recipient of the Overseas Press Club's Bob Considine Award for best daily newspaper interpretation of foreign affairs in 1984 and 1988. She was previously honored with the Georgetown University's Edward Weintal Award for distinguished coverage of American foreign policy in 1980, the National Press Club's Edwin M. Hood Award for excellence in diplomatic reporting in 1982 and the University of Southern California's Distinguished Achievement in Journalism Award in 1983. In recent years, Forbes magazine named Ms. House as One of the Most Powerful Women in 2005. She has been cited in more than 70 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who in the World.
Ms. House received a Bachelor of Journalism degree at the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. While pursuing her degree, she served as the managing editor of the school newspaper, The Daily Texan and was a member of the Orange Jackets, an honorary organization for women on campus. The university later honored her with a Distinguished Alumnus Award. Ms. House also studied and taught at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
